First Report of sp. Parasites Infecting Dinoflagellates from Brazilian Coastal Waters Amoebophrya

چکیده
Members of the parasitic dinoflagellate genus lethally infect other marine dinoflagellates, including red tide forming and toxin-producing species. The known geographical distribution of sp. parasites in costal waters of the northern hemisphere is more likely reflecting a lack of information from other areas rather than the actual picture. We investigated the presence of sp. parasites infecting dinoflagellate cells from South Atlantic coastal waters. Samples were taken in early summer in the Cabo Frio area, Southeast Brazil, using a 20 m mesh-size plankton net. Infection of potential dinoflagellate hosts was analyzed by epifluorescence microscopy after SYTOX staining. Two unidentified sp. were found to be infected by sp. at prevalence levels of 0.5 and 2%. Several other dinoflagellate species were present in the samples, though without detectable infection, indicating some degree of host-specificity by the parasites. The detection of infection in dinoflagellates obtained at a single sampling occasion suggests that parasitism by sp. might be a common phenomenon in the area. Amoebophrya

A Quantitative Assessment of the Role of the Parasite Amoebophrya in the Termination of Alexandrium fundyense Blooms within a Small Coastal Embayment
Parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Amoebophrya infect free-living dinoflagellates, some of which can cause harmful algal blooms (HABs). High prevalence of Amoebophrya spp. has been linked to the decline of some HABs in marine systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of Amoebophrya spp. on the dynamics of dinoflagellate blooms in Salt Pond (MA, USA), particularly the h...

The Persian Gulf is of great economical, environmental and political importance, and includes around 205 species of fishes that only some of them have been studied parasitologically. From the order Pleuronectiformes ( ray-finned fishes), Psettodes erumei (Psettodidae), Pseudorhombus elevatus (Bothidae) and Brachirus orientalis (Soleidae) were selected for the survey. One hundred and forty eig...

متن کاملDevelopment of a dinoflagellate-oriented PCR primer set leads to detection of picoplanktonic dinoflagellates from Long Island Sound.
We developed dinoflagellate-specific 18S rRNA gene primers. PCR amplification using these oligonucleotides for a picoplanktonic DNA sample from Long Island Sound yielded 24 clones, and all but one of these clones were dinoflagellates primarily belonging to undescribed and Amoebophrya-like lineages. These results highlight the need for a systematic investigation of picodinoflagellate diversity i...

Background and purpose: Nowadays the laboratory mice are frequently used in basic science research. However, these animals may be infected with some pathogens as parasites. The study of parasites infecting laboratory mice is important on account of two reasons: 1) zoonotic agents and 2) interference with the results of some studies such as immunology and pharmacology. Thus, we carried out this ...
