چکیده

The horizontal acoustic backscattering strength of a fish school is an important factor for fisheries and for estimation of the size of a fish school using omnidirectional scanning sonar. However, the backscattering strength of a fish school is influenced by their behavior and orientation because the individual fish in the fish school have strong directivity of target strength. This paper discusses a method for estimating the directivity of the backscattering strength of the fish school by analyzing fish school behavior. Sonar data were collected by a purse seine fishing boat equipped with the quantitative scanning sonar FSV-30R in Barents Sea and on the Pacific coast of northern Japan. Swimming speed, swimming direction, volume backscattering strength (SV–SCH), and the target strength of the fish school (NTS) were analyzed for several swimming fish schools. The results showed strong directivity in the backscattering strength at the direction perpendicular to the swimming course; this result is similar to that of the directivity of the target strength. The directivity varied in relation to the distribution of the orientation of the fish, resulting from both the swimming speed and the direction of the fish school. These findings will enable the estimation of fish school abundance more precisely. Classification: Fisheries acoustics/bioacoustics

Target Strength Measurement of Myctophid (Benthosema pterotum) in the Oman Sea

Through a series of research cruises conducted by the R/V Ferdows-1 to assess Myctophid resources, using a SIMRAD EK500 scientific echosounder carried out the Target Strength measurement of Benthosema pterotum in the Oman Sea. The principal method was based on a direct in-situ split-beam measurement technique, which is implemented in the EK500 system. For real-time observations ,the target st...

Simulations of multi-beam sonar echos from schooling individual fish in a quiet environment.

A model is developed and demonstrated for simulating echosounder and sonar observations of fish schools with specified shapes and composed of individuals having specified target strengths and behaviors. The model emulates the performances of actual multi-frequency echosounders and multi-beam echosounders and sonars and generates synthetic echograms of fish schools that can be compared with real...

Acoustic backscattering by deepwater fish measured in situ from a manned submersible

An outstanding problem in fisheries acoustics is the depth dependence of scattering characteristics of swimbladderbearing fish, and the effects of pressure on the target strength of physoclistous fish remain unresolved. In situ echoes from deepwater snappers were obtained with a sonar transducer mounted on a manned submersible next to a low-light video camera, permitting simultaneous echo recor...

Modeling Bistatic Surface Scattering Strength Including a Forward Scattering Lobe with Shadowing Effects

Both the rough air-sea interface and entrapped air bubbles due to wave breaking scatter sound in all directions and contribute to so-called reverberation in active sonar. There are monostatic sonar systems where the source and receiver are at the same position, bistatic sonar systems where the source and receiver are separated, and multistatic sonar systems involving multiple sources and receiv...

Detection of Suspended Sediment Effect on Sidescan Sonar Imagery Using the Navy’s CASS-GRAB Model

Sidescan sonar detects objects buried in the seafloor through generating images of ordnance such as seamine buried in sediments. The sonar operates by illuminating a broad swath of the seabed using a line array of acoustic projectors while acoustic backscattering from the illuminated sediment volume is measured. The effect of suspended sediment on the sonar imagery depends on the volume scatter...
