چکیده

7 We use carbon monoxide (CO) measurements from MLS and TES, and cloud 8 water content measurements from CloudSat to identify the transport pathways of 9 pollutants generated by tropical biomass burning to the upper troposphere (UT). There 10 appeared to be three pathways that transport CO from its surface sources to the UT: 11 " local convection " , " UT advection " and " lower troposphere (LT) advection → 12 convection ". The dominant transport pathway varies geographically. The 13 " local-convection " and " LT advection → convection " pathways were the main 14 contributors for high CO in the UT over Africa, whereas long-range " UT advection " 15 pathway appeared to transport CO to the UT over tropical South America and Atlantic 16 Ocean. This case study suggests that our method of identifying these pathways 17 through joint use of multiple A-Train satellite sensors can potentially be applied to 18 address the need of characterizing and understanding the climatological variations of 19 the dominant pathways for CO transport to the UT.

Geographic and seasonal distributions of CO transport pathways and their roles in determining CO centers in the upper troposphere

Past studies have identified a variety of pathways by which carbon monoxide (CO) may be transported from the surface to the tropical upper troposphere (UT); however, the relative roles that these transport pathways play in determining the distribution and seasonality of CO in the tropical UT remain unclear. We have developed a method to automate the identification of two pathways (“local convec...

Linking horizontal and vertical transports of biomass fire emissionsto the tropical Atlantic ozone paradox during the Northern Hemisphere winter season: climatology

During the Northern hemisphere winter season, biomass burning is widespread in West Africa, yet the total tropospheric column ozone values (<30 DU) over much of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean (15 N–5 S) are relatively low. At the same time, the tropospheric column ozone values in the Southern Tropical Atlantic are higher than those in the Northern Hemisphere (ozone paradox). We examine the causes ...

Space-borne observations link the tropical atlantic ozone maximum and paradox to lightning

The potential enhancement of tropospheric column ozone values over the Tropical Atlantic Ocean on a seasonal basis by lightning is investigated using satellite derived ozone data, TRMM lightning data, ozonesonde data and NCEP reanalysis during 1998–2001. Our results show that the number of lightning flashes in Africa and South America reach a maximum during September, October and November (SON)...

Quantification of Radicals Generated in a Sonicator

The hydroxyl radical (OH•) is a powerful oxidant produced as a consequence of cavitation in water. It can react nonspecifically in breaking down persistent organic pollutants in water into their mineral form. It can also recombine to form hydrogen peroxide which is very useful in water treatment. In this study, terephthalic acid (TA) and potassium iodide dosimetry were used to quantify and inve...
