چکیده
Future long-duration manned space flights will require regenerative life-support systems. The Bosch process is one of several alternative regenerative life-support systems presently being evaluated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. 2H2 + CO2 = 2H20 + C Prototype Bosch units to reduce metabolic CO2 to carbon have been constructed and operated successfully with large recycle ratios. The water obtained per pass was, however, far less than that predicted from equilibrium calculations. An investigation was performed which determined this limitation to be due to oxide formation; the catalyst condition being controlled by PH2 /PH20 and/or PCO /PCO2 ratios. Carbide formation was shown to be slow, having little effect on efficient Bosch operation. Conclusions were drawn and the optimal recycle configuration and operating conditions were specified. In addition, a metallurgical investigation of morphological changes occurring during reaction was performed. Results indicate two distinct morphologies developed depending on temperature during the oxidation-reduction sequence. One is typical of a process controlled by solid state diffusion; the other by diffusion (gas)/interfacial reaction control. The effects of carbon fiber formation were shown along with the examination of individual carbon fibers.

Transient Entropy Generation Analysis During Wustite Pellet Reduction to Sponge Iron
The present study carefully examined entropy generation during wustite pellet reduction to sponge iron. The finite volume method was used to solve the governing equations. The grain model was used to simulate the reaction rate. The reactant gases including carbon monoxide and hydrogen were converted to water and carbon dioxide after wustite reduction. Entropy is generated by heat transfer, mass...
متن کاملEffect of Steam During Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Using Biomass-Derived Syngas
The gasification of biomass is a promising technique to generate different forms of valuable alternative energy, including direct thermal energy and further conversion of synthesis gas to clean liquid fuels or chemicals via Fischer– Tropsch synthesis (FTS) [1–5]. The ideal H2/CO ratio for FTS is ~2/1 based on the stoichiometry. However, The H2/ CO for the synthesis gas obtained from biomass gas...
متن کاملEffect of Water Gas Shift Reaction on the Non-Isothermal Reduction of Wustite Porous Pellet Using Syngas
Effect of water gas shift reaction (CO+H2O=CO2+H2) on wustite reduction has been investigated by a transient, non-isothermal mathematical model based on grain model. In this model, wustite porous pellet is reduced using Syngas, namely a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water vapor. For this purpose, governing equations containing continuity equation of species and energy...

sorption results9 revealed that the iron surface was mostly covered by promoter oxides of AI, Ca, and K. Postreaction XPS results also revealed a C( Is) XPS peak of weak to moderate intensity centered at 284.1-283.7 eV. This binding energy approaches those (ca. 283.5 eV) reported for iron cat bide^.^^*'^ More convincing evidence for carbide formation was obtained from TPHT results collected aft...
متن کاملGas/solid carbon branching ratios in surface-mediated reactions and the incorporation of carbonaceous material into planetesimals.
We report the ratio of the initial carbon available as CO that forms gas-phase compounds compared to the fraction that deposits as a carbonaceous solid (the gas/solid branching ratio) as a function of time and temperature for iron, magnetite, and amorphous iron silicate smoke catalysts during surface-mediated reactions in an excess of hydrogen and in the presence of N2. This fraction varies fro...
