Carotid cavernous fistula associated with Fogarty catheter angioplasty.

چکیده
Carotid cavernous fistulae are usually the consequence of a vascular tear due to head trauma or a ruptured infraclinoid aneurysm. Although rare , iatrogenic carotid cavernous fistulae can result from percutaneous retrogasserian procedures, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, and thromboembolectomy via a Fogarty catheter [1-3] . Since the first report on the use of Fogarty catheters in 1963 [4], only 10 iatrogenic cases have been described. We describe an iatrogenic carotid cavernous fistula that occurred in a patient who was treated with a Fogarty catheter for fibromuscular dysplasia. The fistula was closed with a detachable balloon [5].

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty prior to carotid cavernous fistula embolization.
Detachable balloon embolization has become well established as the primary treatment for carotid cavernous fistulae, and numerous articles have been written on techniques for balloon placement in the cavernous sinus [1-3]. Recently, several case reports have described the use of angioplasty of the internal carotid artery for stenosis resulting from either fibromuscular dysplasia or arterioscler...
متن کاملTemporary closure of congenital tracheoesophageal fistula with Fogarty catheter.
INTRODUCTION Congenital tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a common anomaly, occurring in one of every 2,500 live births. Greater than 90% of cases involve esophageal atresia (EA). The most common form of TEF with EA is the upper esophagus ending as a blind pouch and TEF connecting to distal esophagus a few millimeters above the carina. The exact cause is not yet completely understood. In recen...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a Fogarty arterial embolectomy catheter (Fogarty catheter) in intraoperative balloon angioplasty of the cephalic vein, in order to determine its effect on the patency of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) created for hemodialysis access. METHODS A total of 156 patients who underwent creation of an AVF were divided into two groups, bas...
متن کاملDirect carotid cavernous fistula in infancy: presentation and treatment.
An 11-month-old female patient presented with symptoms of orbital venous congestion. A CT scan showed enlarged superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus on the symptomatic side. Catheter angiography confirmed a direct carotid-cavernous fistula with intra- and extracranial venous drainage. Successful coil embolization of the fistula was performed with resolution of the infant's symptoms and r...
متن کاملTreatment of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula using detachable balloon catheters.
The goal of therapy in patients with traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulas is to occlude the fistula, preferably while maintaining the carotid blood flow. Surgical techniques that treat the fistula remote from the cavernous sinus often cannot maintain carotid patency. Various interventional techniques using detachable balloons have been developed. The most common technique uses the endarterial r...
