Mineral Mapping Using Simulated Worldview-3 Short-Wave-Infrared Imagery
نویسندگان
چکیده
WorldView commercial imaging satellites comprise a constellation developed by DigitalGlobe Inc. (Longmont, CO, USA). Worldview-3 (WV-3), currently planned for launch in 2014, will have 8 spectral bands in the Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR), and an additional 8 bands in the Short-Wave-Infrared (SWIR); the approximately 1.0–2.5 μm spectral range. WV-3 will be the first commercial system with both high spatial resolution and multispectral SWIR capability. Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data collected at 3 m spatial resolution with 86 SWIR bands having 10 nm spectral resolution were used to simulate the new WV-3 SWIR data. AVIRIS data were converted to reflectance, geographically registered, and resized to the proposed 3.7 and 7.5 m spatial resolutions. WV-3 SWIR band pass functions were used to spectrally resample the data to the proposed 8 SWIR bands. Characteristic reflectance signatures extracted from the data for known mineral locations (endmembers) were used to map spatial locations of specific minerals. The WV-3 results, when compared to spectral mapping using the full AVIRIS SWIR dataset, illustrate that the WV-3 spectral bands should permit identification and mapping of some key minerals, however, minerals with similar spectral features may be confused and will not be mapped with the same detail as using hyperspectral systems. The high spatial resolution should provide detailed mapping of complex alteration mineral patterns not achievable by current multispectral systems. The WV-3 simulation results are promising and indicate that this sensor will be a significant tool for geologic remote sensing. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2013, 5 2689

Effect of Reduced Spatial Resolution on Mineral Mapping Using Imaging Spectrometry - Examples Using Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI)-Simulated Data
The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) is a proposed NASA satellite remote sensing system combining a visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometer with over 200 spectral bands between 0.38 and 2.5 μm and an 8-band thermal infrared (TIR) multispectral imager, both at 60 m spatial resolution. Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) (2.0–2.5 μm) simulation results are described here using Ai...
متن کاملDiscrimination of arid vegetation with airborne multispectral scanner hyperspectral imagery
Hyperspectral imagery from the airborne multispectral scanner was evaluated for discrimination and mapping of vegetation components in a semi-arid rangeland environment in Southern Australia. Automated unmixing of two image strips with 5-m resolution revealed several vegetation endmembers in the visible, near infrared (near-IR), and short-wave infrared portions of the imagery. Identity of the e...
متن کاملComparison of Satellite Imagery and Ground-Based Active Optical Sensors as Yield Predictors in Sugar Beet, Spring Wheat, Corn, and Sunflower
1 The original use of remote sensing using infrared photography for yield variation was conducted by Colwell (1956). Since the launch of the Landsat 1 imaging satellite in 1972 (Mulla, 2013), satellite imagery has been widely used in agriculture for yield prediction and most lately for site-specific N management. Bhatti et al. (1991) used Landsat imagery and auxiliary data to estimate wheat yie...
متن کاملMapping savanna tree species using Carnegie Airborne Observatory hyperspectral data resampled to WorldView - 2 multispectral configuration
The advent of hyperspectral remote sensing has provided new opportunities for species mapping. However, the high dimensionality of hyperspectral data limits the application of parametric classifiers for species mapping because of the demand for a large number of training samples. This situation could change with the arrival of new spaceborne multispectral sensors such as WorldView-2 and RapidEy...
متن کاملEvaluation of Worldview-2 Imagery for Urban Land Cover Mapping Using the Interimage System
Mapping of urban land cover using remote sensing technology has been widely explored, especially with the recent availability of high resolution images and object-based processing techniques. This study uses the InterIMAGE system and WorldView-2 orbital sensor imagery, two technologies which are new and still little explored in urban studies, to classify land cover in five test-sites near to th...
