چکیده

The morphological diversity of Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids has often been qualitatively described, but rarely have hypotheses based on these descriptions been tested empirically. Using landmark based geometric morphometrics, shapes are analyzed independent of other aspects of the body form (e.g., size). The estimation of shape disparity, the quantitative measure of the variance of these raw shapes, can then be applied in order to objectively test hypotheses about morphological diversity. The shape disparity within and between different groups is explored as well as how it is partitioned within the cichlid body. Tanganyika cichlids are found to have significantly greater shape disparity than Malawi cichlids. Ectodini is found to have significantly greater shape disparity than other Great Lake tribes. Piscivorous cichlids are significantly more disparate in shape than cichlids with other diets, and the shape disparity of the cranial region was significantly greater than that of the postcranial region.

Speciation and Radiation in African Haplochromine Cichlids

The explosive radiation of cichlid fishes in the African Great Lakes has intrigued biologists for many decades. The faunas of these lakes are outstanding, both in species richness and in the composition of their fish fauna. Several of these lakes contain as many or even more fish species than all the rivers and lakes of Europe together (Lowe-McConnell 1987; Kottelat 1997). About 90% of the fish...

Origins of Shared Genetic Variation in African Cichlids

Cichlid fishes have evolved tremendous morphological and behavioral diversity in the waters of East Africa. Within each of the Great Lakes Tanganyika, Malawi, and Victoria, the phenomena of hybridization and retention of ancestral polymorphism explain allele sharing across species. Here, we explore the sharing of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between the major East African cichlid asse...

Phylogeography of Haplochromine Fish in the Lake Victoria Region

again somewhere and celebrate our traditional barbecue on the roof !!! Johannes set foot on the shores of the Great East African Lakes. Luckily, Darwin stumbled over some remote Islands in the Pacific Ocean instead and found some finches there, and later wrote his famous books. I think we are very lucky that we have something like an Evolutionary Theory today. For if Darwin had seen the splendi...

Visual communication in East African cichlid fishes : Diversity in a phylogenetic context

The flocks of cichlid fishes in the African Great Lakes are a fascinating system for studies of visual ecology. Separate radiations have produced a diverse flock of several hundred closely related cichlid species in each of the three large lakes (Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria). Closely related species exhibit a diverse range of color patterns. The three lakes have dramatically different photi...
