چکیده

A scanner is developed that can capture range as well as color data from four sides of an object and combine the data into a complete model. In this scanner four synchronous cameras scan an object from four sides in a coordinate system that is attached to the scanner. Data produced by the four cameras, therefore, automatically come together without the need for image registration. The uniqueness of the scanner is in its use of an imaginary (virtual) laser rather than an actual one to scan an object. Use of a virtual laser makes it possible to scan an object with detailed color variations and under regular scene lighting where traditional laser scanners fail. Example images produced by the proposed scanner are presented and discussed. The scanner reconstructs an object in 3-D with 1mm resolution in X, Y, and Z directions.

Performance Analysis of the Microsoft Kinect Sensor for 2D Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) Techniques

This paper presents a performance analysis of two open-source, laser scanner-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques (i.e., Gmapping and Hector SLAM) using a Microsoft Kinect to replace the laser sensor. Furthermore, the paper proposes a new system integration approach whereby a Linux virtual machine is used to run the open source SLAM algorithms. The experiments were cond...

Extrinsic Calibration of a 3D Laser Scanner and an Omnidirectional Camera ?

We propose an approach for external calibration of a 3D laser scanner with an omnidirectional camera system. The utility of an accurate calibration is that it allows for precise co-registration between the camera imagery and the 3D point cloud. This association can be used to enhance various state of the art algorithms in computer vision and robotics. The extrinsic calibration technique used he...
