چکیده

Medium Spectral Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) oxygen A band measurements were used as a proxy for the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC), to be launched on NASA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). The high spatial resolution of MERIS (1 × 1 km) is exploited to study the effects of subscale spatial heterogeneity of clouds on the cloud-top pressure retrieved at the coarser spatial resolution of EPIC (10 × 10 km). In general, for a sub-scale cloud fraction less than 1, a shift of cloud-top pressure toward the middle atmosphere is found, with a low-bias for high clouds and a high-bias for low clouds. In addition, the deviation is found to be a function of surface reflectance. The subscale variability of fully clouded EPIC pixels causes a weak underestimation of cloud-top pressure, when compared to averaged high-resolution retrievals.

Meris Surface Pressure and Cloud Flag: Present Status and Improvements

This paper deals with the verification, consistency analysis and potential improvements of the surface pressure product. Pressure determination is based on the absorption in the Oxygen A band and is very sensitive to the spectral characterisation of MERIS. We describe how, thanks to programmable capability of MERIS, the spectral characterisation of MERIS was done using the pressure retrieval an...

Passive remote sensing of altitude and optical depth of dust plumes using the oxygen A and B bands: First results from EPIC/DSCOVR at Lagrange-1 point

We presented an algorithm for inferring aerosol layer height (ALH) and optical depth (AOD) over ocean surface from radiances in oxygen A and B bands measured by the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) orbiting at Lagrangian-1 point. The algorithm was applied to EPIC imagery of a 2 day dust outbreak over the North Atlantic Ocean. Retrieved ALH...

The semianalytical cloud retrieval algorithm for SCIAMACHY II. The application to MERIS and SCIAMACHY data

The SemiAnalytical CloUd Retrieval Algorithm (SACURA) is applied to the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) data. In particular, we derive simultaneously cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud top height (CTH), using SCIAMACHY measurements in the visible (442 nm, COT) and in the oxygen A-band (755–775 nm, CTH). Some of the results obtained are comp...

Uncertainties in cloud phase and optical thickness retrievals from the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC).

This paper presents an investigation of the expected uncertainties of a single channel cloud optical thickness (COT) retrieval technique, as well as a simple cloud temperature threshold based thermodynamic phase approach, in support of the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) mission. DSCOVR cloud products will be derived from Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) observations in the ult...

The Retrieval of Cloud-top Pressure Using Combined Measurements of Meris and Aatsr

Synergetic measurements of MERIS and AATSR onboard ENVISAT are used for the retrieval of cloudtop pressure. As the MERIS cloud-top pressure retrieval algorithm has been proven to produce accurate results in optically thick, single-layered cases ([1]), special attention has been given to multi-layered clouds. An algorithm for the retrieval of the height of multiple cloud layers is presented, rel...
