چکیده

971 May 2015 F OR chemists and physicists, xenon is a noble gas with 54 protons and low reactivity (or “inert”) due to an outer shell that is replete with electrons. For anesthesiologists, xenon is a drug with remarkable properties as a fast-acting anesthetic, analgesic, cardioprotectant, and neuroprotectant.1,2 But how does it work? In this issue of AnesthesIOlOgy, Mattusch et al.3 report an impressive study that provides insight into the molecular and neurophysiological mechanisms of xenon.

Xenon preconditioning: molecular mechanisms and biological effects

Xenon is one of noble gases and has been recognized as an anesthetic for more than 50 years. Xenon possesses many of the characteristics of an ideal anesthetic, but it is not widely applied in clinical practice mainly because of its high cost. In recent years, numerous studies have demonstrated that xenon as an anesthetic can exert neuroprotective and cardioprotective effects in different model...

Exploring the Effects on Lipid Bilayer Induced by Noble Gases via Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Noble gases seem to have no significant effect on the anesthetic targets due to their simple, spherical shape. However, xenon has strong narcotic efficacy and can be used clinically, while other noble gases cannot. The mechanism remains unclear. Here, we performed molecular dynamics simulations on phospholipid bilayers with four kinds of noble gases to elucidate the difference of their effects ...

Molecular mechanisms transducing the anesthetic, analgesic, and organ-protective actions of xenon.

The anesthetic properties of xenon have been known for more than 50 yr, and the safety and efficacy of xenon inhalational anesthesia has been demonstrated in several recent clinical studies. In addition, xenon demonstrates many favorable pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, which could be used in certain niche clinical settings such as cardiopulmonary bypass. This inert gas is capabl...

Investigation of Three-Body Interactions on the Phase Behaviour of Noble Gases

In the following sections we report the results obtained studying the role of threebody interatomic potentials on noble gas coexisting phases. Section 3.1 gives details of the Gibbs ensemble simulations for vapour-liquid coexisting phases of argon, krypton and xenon as pure fluids and of an argon-krypton mixture. In section 3.2 we report the analytic expression of an effective potential which w...

Can xenon in water inhibit ice growth? Molecular dynamics of phase transitions in water-Xe system.

Motivated by recent experiments showing the promise of noble gases as cryoprotectants, we perform molecular dynamics modeling of phase transitions in water with xenon under cooling. We follow the structure and dynamics of xenon water solution as a function of temperature. Homogeneous nucleation of clathrate hydrate phase is observed and characterized. As the temperature is further reduced we ob...
