چکیده

In an environment of anonymous random matching, Kandori [1992] showed that with a sufficiently rich class of simple information systems the folk theorem holds. We specialize to a gift-giving game and examine the stochastic stability of a process of learning and evolution in this setting. If the benefit of future altruism is too small, then there is no altruism. When the benefit of altruism is large then only altruism will survive in the very long run. 1 We are grateful to financial support from National Science Foundation Grant SBR-93-20695 and the UCLA Academic Senate. Note: Using the Emergent Seed to Completely Characterize “evolution and Information in a Gift Giving Game.”

Let β be the ratio of benefit to cost of an altruistic act controlling for trembles. In “Evolution and Information in a Gift Giving Game” [3] the stochastically stable strategy is found if β < 2 or β > 4. In this note the stochastically stable strategy is found for the intermediary range and the speed of evolution is bounded. It is shown that if β ≤ 3 then players are selfish in the long run, i...

Building Trust - One Gift at a Time

This paper reports an experiment evaluating the effect of gift giving on building trust. We have nested our explorations in the standard version of the investment game. Our gift treatment includes a dictator stage in which the trustee decides whether to give a gift to the trustor before both of them proceed to play the investment game. We observe that in such case the majority of trustees offer...

Gift Giving with Emotions

This paper presents a two-player, psychological game-theoretic model of gift giving where emotions matter. Beliefs enter directly into players’ payoff functions. Surprise, disappointment, embarrassment and pride arise from comparing players’ beliefs about the gift they will give or receive to the actual choice of gift. Depending on beliefs and the cost of the gift, a gift-giving, a non-gift-giv...

Reactive Versus Anticipative Decision Making in a Novel Gift-Giving Game

Evolutionary game theory focuses on the fitness differences between simple discrete or probabilistic strategies to explain the evolution of particular decision-making behavior within strategic situations. Although this approach has provided substantial insights into the presence of fairness or generosity in gift-giving games, it does not fully resolve the question of which cognitive mechanisms ...

Here's Something You Never Asked For, Didn't Know Existed, and Can't Easily Obtain: a Search Model of Gift Giving Here's Something You Never Asked For, Didn't Know Existed, and Can't Easily Obtain: a Search Model of Gift Giving

Gift giving is thought to be welfare decreasing. This claim rests on two key assumptions, namely, full information as to the whereabouts of all goods and the ability to reach the stores that contain desired goods costlessly. In this paper, we replace these two assumptions with the more realistic assumptions of uncertainty about the location of goods and search costs. In sharp contrast to existi...
