A Strong Field and a Deserving Winner

چکیده
Medical History is delighted to announce the winner of the 2014 William Bynum Prize: Clare Leeming-Latham’s wonderful essay titled ‘Unravelling the “tangled web”: Chemotherapy for Tuberculosis in Britain, 1940–70’. We are also pleased to announce a set of joint runners up: Elisa González (‘Nurturing the Citizens of the Future: Milk Stations and Child Nutrition in Puerto Rico, 1929–60’) and Anne Hanley (‘Venereology at the Polyclinic: Postgraduate medical education among general practitioners in England, 1899–1914’). The prize committee was chaired by Professor William Bynum, and also included Professor Alison Bashford, Dr Joanna Radin, Professor Andrew Scull and Dr Laurence Totelin. We had an extraordinarily strong field. Out of the eleven entries, six are showcased in this issue (these essays sit alongside the piece by Katherine A. Walker, who was a runner up in the 2013 Bynum Prize competition). Based on the reports received, a further four entries submitted in 2014 have been asked to revise and resubmit for potential future publication. Only one essay did not meet the standard required for publication. Our congratulations to all these young scholars – all of us, Professor Bynum included, were impressed with the range of tremendous work on display.

The social optimum is that the jury select the deserving winner. Each individual juror may be biased in favor (friend) or against (enemy) some contestant, and therefore her goal does not necessarily coincide with ...

Compared with the control condition, Study 1 found that individuals gave less credit to another person for his promotion after they recalled their own unfair experience. Study 2 revealed that personal injustice led weak just-world...

A combinatorial auction is an auction where the bidders have the choice to bid on bundles of items. The WDP in combinatorial auctions is the problem of finding winning bids that maximize the auctioneer’s revenue under the constraint that each item can be allocated to at most one bidder. The WDP is known as an NP-hard problem with practical applications like electronic commerce, production manag...
متن کاملPreface DESERVING THEORY
Deserving, including equity and fairness, lies at the heart of social–moral cognition. The deserving schema—your deserts should be proportional to your deserving—is age-old. The idea of an algebraic model of proportionality goes back to Aristotle and was much discussed in the latter half of the 20 century in terms of equity theory. But to judge proportionality we must be able to measure how muc...

Communicating ideas/news is the primary function of language. However, language does not usually fulfill this as it is expected to. To Dellinger (1995, p. 3) language, “can never appear by itself-it always appears as the representative of a system of linguistic terms, which themselves realize discursive and ideological system.” The present study, analyzing sports articles, aims at investigating...
