The New Chromosphere

چکیده
The natural state of the Solar chromosphere is very dynamic. Any photospheric disturbance will grow and naturally form shocks over the twenty scale-heights in density between the photosphere and the corona. Observations in the resonance lines from singly ionized calcium and recently in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum observed with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory satellite also show a very dynamic chromosphere. This dynamic picture is further supported by numerical simulations. Static and dynamic pictures of the chromosphere are fundamentally diierent. The simulations also show that time variations are crucial for our understanding of the chromosphere itself and for the spectral features formed there.

The quiet chromosphere Old wisdom , new insights , future needs
The introduction to this review summarizes chromosphere observation in two figures. The first part showcases the historical emphasis on the eclipse chromosphere in the development of NLTE line formation theory and criticizes 1D modeling. The second part advertises recent breakthroughs after many decades of standstill. The third part discusses what may or should come next.
متن کاملNon-WKB Models of the FIP Effect: Implications for Solar Coronal Heating and the Coronal Helium and Neon Abundances
We revisit in more detail a model for element abundance fractionation in the solar chromosphere, that gives rise to the “FIP Effect” in the solar corona and wind. Elements with first ionization potential below about 10 eV, i.e. those that are predominantly ionized in the chromosphere, are enriched in the corona by a factor 3-4. We model the propagation of Alfvén waves through the chromosphere u...
متن کاملSpatially Resolved Stis Spectra of Betelgeuse’s Upper Chromosphere and Circumstellar Dust Envelope
The Hubble Space Telescope observed red supergiant Betelgeuse (αOri) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to investigate the outer atmosphere from spatially resolved spectra. We present a new set of seven highresolution near-UV spectra observed with HST-STIS in fall 2002 and spring 2003, by scanning at chromospheric intensity peak-up position and six off-limb target positions up to thr...
متن کاملNonlinear Effects in Three-minute Oscillations of the Solar Chromosphere. I. An Analytical Nonlinear Solution and Detection of the Second Harmonic
The vertical propagation of nonlinear acoustic waves in an isothermal atmosphere is considered. A new analytical solution that describes a finite-amplitude wave of an arbitrary wavelength is obtained. Although the shortand long-wavelength limits were previously considered separately, the new solution describes both limiting cases within a common framework and provides a straightforward way of i...
متن کاملModeling the Solar Chromosphere
Spectral diagnostic features formed in the solar chromosphere are few and difficult to interpret — they are neither formed in the optically thin regime nor in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). To probe the state of the chromosphere, both from observations and theory, it is therefore necessary with modeling. I discuss both traditional semi-empirical modeling, numerical experiments illustrat...
