Escherichia coli is one of the commonest bacteria causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially in women[1]. Urinary tract infections have an enormous disease burden, causing about 150 million cases per annum worldwide[2]. These E. coli strains causing UTI are often multi drug resistant, i.e. refractory to 3 or more different classes of antibiotic agents[3].
