Starvation and Famine among SCCS Societies
نویسنده
چکیده
The codes pertain to ten variables: (1) ordinary nutritional conditions, (2) occurrence of short-term starvation, (3) occurrence of seasonal starvation, (4) temporal proximity of seasonal starvation, (5) occurrence of famine, (6) temporal proximity of last famine, (7) severity of famine, (8) persistence of famine, (9) recurrence of famine, and (10) contingency of famine. The contingency codes have not been published previously. The others originally appeared in the journal CROSS-CULTURAL RESEARCH (Dirks 1993). Note, however, that the scale for the recurrence of famine has been modified since its original publication and the codes revised accordingly. Codes for other variables have been changed in a few cases because of newly acquired information.

Codes on Highest Number Counted for the Standard Sample
This paper presents codes on the highest number a society can count to. In the original study (Divale 1999) these codes were used to test a model that explains the variability in counting systems found in traditional societies. Societies that live in areas of climatic instability in terms of temperature and precipitation extremes tend to have period starvation and famine, which in turn stimulat...
متن کاملHunter-gatherers have less famine than agriculturalists.
The idea that hunter-gatherer societies experience more frequent famine than societies with other modes of subsistence is pervasive in the literature on human evolution. This idea underpins, for example, the 'thrifty genotype hypothesis'. This hypothesis proposes that our hunter-gatherer ancestors were adapted to frequent famines, and that these once adaptive 'thrifty genotypes' are now respons...
متن کاملHuman Lactation, Pair-bonds, and Alloparents : A Cross-Cultural Analysis.
The evolutionary origin of human pair-bonds is uncertain. One hypothesis, supported by data from forgers, suggests that pair-bonds function to provision mothers and dependent offspring during lactation. Similarly, public health data from large-scale industrial societies indicate that single mothers tend to wean their children earlier than do women living with a mate. Here we examine relations b...
متن کاملSen’s Entitlement Approach: Critiques and Counter-critiques
Twenty years after Poverty and Famines elaborated the entitlement approach as an innovative and holistic approach to famine analysis, debates about some of its fundamental assertions remain unresolved. This paper examines four limitations acknowledged by Sen himself: starvation by choice, disease-driven rather than starvation-driven mortality, ambiguities in entitlement speci cation and extra-...
متن کاملFrailty and famine: Patterns of mortality and physiological stress among victims of famine in medieval London.
OBJECTIVES Famine can be defined as a shortage of foodstuffs that instigates widespread excess mortality due to starvation, infectious disease, and social disruption. Like other causes of catastrophic mortality, famine has the potential to be selective. This study examines how famines in medieval London were selective with respect to previous stress, age, and sex. METHODS This study compares ...
