Atmospheric time constant measured from DIMM and MASS

چکیده
Here we adjust traditional definitions of atmospheric time constant and isoplanatic angle to make them more useful for adaptive optics and interferometry and, at the same time, easier to measure.

Combined MASS-DIMM instrument for atmospheric turbulence studies
Several site-testing programs and observatories currently use combined MASS-DIMM instruments for monitoring parameters of optical turbulence. The instrument is described here. After a short recall of the measured quantities and operational principles, the optics and electronics of MASS-DIMM, interfacing to telescopes and detectors, and operation are covered in some detail. Particular attention ...
متن کاملFrom Differential Image Motion to Seeing
The theory of the differential image motion monitor (DIMM), a standard and widely spread method of measuring astronomical seeing, is reviewed and extended. More accurate coefficients for computing the Fried parameter from the measured variance of image motion are given. They are tested by numerical simulations that show that any DIMM measures Zernike tilts, not image centroids as generally assu...
متن کاملOptical parameters relevant for High Angular Resolution at Paranal from GSM instrument and surface layer contribution
Main atmospheric parameters characterizing the turbulence were measured at the Paranal ESO Observatory (Chile) with the Generalized Seeing Monitor (GSM) during 19 nights in November–December 1998. The median seeing for this period was 0.88′′, a little worse than average, the spatial coherence outer scale of the wavefront L0 = 22.0 m and the median isoplanatic angle θ0 = 1.90′′. A very good agre...
متن کاملAccurate seeing measurements with MASS and DIMM
Astronomical seeing is quantified by a single parameter, turbulence integral, in the framework of the Kolmogorov turbulence model. This parameter can be routinely measured by a Differential Image Motion Monitor, DIMM. A new instrument, MultiAperture Scintillation Sensor (MASS), permits to measure the seeing in the free atmosphere above ∼0.5km and, together with a DIMM, to estimate the ground-la...
متن کاملOptical Turbulence Profiles at Mauna Kea Measured by MASS and SCIDAR
The vertical distribution of turbulence over Mauna Kea has been measured on four nights in 2002 October, simultaneously using two different instruments based on stellar scintillation—the generalized SCIDAR (scintillation detection and ranging) and MASS (multiaperture scintillation sensor). The turbulence integrals match within 20%, and the low-resolution profiles delivered by MASS correctly rev...
