چکیده

Mycobacterium simiae is a multidrug-resistant, slowgrowing, nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) that has been rarely reported as a cause of pulmonary infections and disseminated disease in immunocompromised hosts, especially in patients with advanced AIDS [1]. Nontuberculous mycobacterium infections caused by M simiae have increasingly been reported as a cause for cervical lymphadenitis in immunocompetent children [2, 3]; however, infection of the parotid gland secondary to M simiae has not been reported in the literature. We present the diagnosis and management of a child with suppurative parotitis caused by M simiae with excision and adjunctive antimicrobial therapy.

Anti-interferon-γ autoantibody-associated disseminated Mycobacterium abscessus infection mimicking parotid cancer with multiple metastases

RATIONALE Among the nontuberculous mycobacteria, Mycobacterium abscessus is a common cause of skin, soft tissue, and bone infections. However, disseminated M. abscessus infection that mimics cancer metastasis with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition has rarely been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS A nonsmoking 73-year-old man with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition re...

Disseminated Mycobacterium simiae infection in a non-immunosuppressed patient in the USA

Mycobacterium simiae is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) endemic to the southwestern United States, the Middle East and Cuba, and has been isolated from tap water, including municipal water [1]. Although NTM form an integral part of the environment, they have potential to cause clinical disease in immunocompromised hosts [2–4]. M. simiae most commonly causes pulmonary disease, however, bon...

Medical Management for the Treatment of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infection of the Parotid Gland: Avoiding Surgery May Be Possible

Infection with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is uncommon in the head and neck; therefore there is no clear consensus on treating these infections. Our objective was to report our experience with a unique case of NTM infection of the parotid in an immunocompetent patient, in order to determine appropriate management through our experience with this pathology. A 57-year-old man, known for num...

Evaluation Drug Susceptibility of Clinical Isolates of Mycobacterium Simiea Using REMA Plate Method in Mashhad

Introduction: Non-tuberculous species of Mycobacterium are a large group of Mycobacterium and are widely distributed throughout the world. Increased isolation of non-tuberculous mycobacteria from patients with mycobacteria infections in Iranian laboratories was associated with erroneous and unnecessary drug treatment, so that in some cases isolated strains considered as drug resistant strains. ...
