چکیده

We propose two kinds of wire configurations fabricated on an atom chip surface for creating two-dimensional (2D) adiabatic rf guide with an inhomogeneous rf magnetic field and a homogenous dc magnetic field. The guiding state can be selected by changing the detuning between the frequency of rf magnetic field and the resonance frequency of two Zeeman sublevels. We also discuss the optimization of loading efficiency and the trap depth and how to decide proper construction when designing an rf atom chip. c © 2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 020.7010, 020.1670, 230.3990

Atom fiber for omnidirectional guiding of cold neutral atoms.

We present an omnidirectional matter waveguide on an atom chip. The guide is based on a combination of two current-carrying wires and a bias field pointing perpendicular to the chip surface. Thermal atoms are guided for more than two complete turns along a 25-mm-long spiral path (with curve radii as short as 200 microm) at various atom-surface distances (35-450 microm). An extension of the sche...

Effect of magnetization inhomogeneity on magnetic microtraps for atoms

We report on the origin of fragmentation of ultracold atoms observed on a magnetic film atom chip. Radio frequency spectroscopy and optical imaging of the trapped atoms is used to characterize small spatial variations of the magnetic field near the film surface. Direct observations indicate the fragmentation is due to a corrugation of the magnetic potential caused by long range inhomogeneity in...

Detecting Neutral Atoms on an Atom Chip

Detecting single atoms (qubits) is a key requirement for implementing quantum information processing on an atom chip. The detector should ideally be integrated on the chip. Here we present and compare different methods capable of detecting neutral atoms on an atom chip. After a short introduction to fluorescence and absorption detection we discuss cavity enhanced detection of single atoms. In p...

Ion Trap in a Semiconductor Chip

The electromagnetic manipulation of isolated atoms has led to many advances in physics, from laser cooling and Bose-Einstein condensation of cold gases to the precise quantum control of individual atomic ions. Work on miniaturizing electromagnetic traps to the micrometer scale promises even higher levels of control and reliability. Compared with ‘chip traps’ for confining neutral atoms, ion tra...

Carsten Henkel Coherence theory of atomic de Broglie waves and electromagnetic near fields

We theoretically discuss the interaction of neutral particles (atoms, molecules) with surfaces in the regime where it is mediated by the electromagnetic field. A thorough characterization of the field at sub-wavelength distances is worked out, including energy density spectra and coherence functions. The results are applied to typical situations in integrated atom optics, where ultracold atoms ...
