چکیده

In this article we provide a refmed analysis of learning in finite parameter spaces using the Triggering Learning Algorithm (TLA) of Gibson and Wexler (1994). We show that the behavior of the TLA can be modeled exactly as a Markov chain. This Markov model allows us to (1) describe formally the conditions for learnability in such spaces, (2) uncover problematic states in addition to the local maxima described by Gibson and Wexler, and (3) characterize convergence times for the learning algorithms quantitatively. Inaddition, we present arguments questioning the psychological plausibility of the TLA as a learning algorithm.

Remarks and Replies

This article shows that Error-Driven Constraint Demotion (EDCD), an error-driven learning algorithm proposed by Tesar (1995) for Prince and Smolensky’s (1993/2004) version of Optimality Theory, can fail to converge to a correct totally ranked hierarchy of constraints, unlike the earlier non-error-driven learning algorithms proposed by Tesar and Smolensky (1993). The cause of the problem is foun...

Validation of Lifelong Learning Tool for Public Librarians' Users in High Schools

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to validate the questionnaire on the lifelong learning readiness of high school users of public libraries. Methodology: This research is an applied and descriptive-correlational study. The statistical population consists of the high school users of public libraries from whom 201 students were selected by using the random sampling method. The questionnaire ...

Remarks and Replies A Simple Proof

Adapting arguments from Eisner 1997, 2000, this remark provides a simple proof that the generation problem for Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 2004) is NP-hard. The proof needs only the binary evaluation of constraints and uses only constraints generally employed in the Optimality Theory literature. In contrast, rule-based derivational systems are easily computable, belonging to the cla...

Selective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies

The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

Some remarks on Artemisia subgenus Serephidium (Asteraceae) mostly from Afghanistan

When worked out the treatment of Artemisia for Flora Iranica, in several cases no good, determinable material was available, especially from outside of Afghanistan, namely, Iran and the neighbouring Middle Asian regions. This was especially a problem for species of the homogamous group Serephidium. During the work on very rich new material of this group from Iran, collected by V. Mozaffarian (T...
