Carotid lesions--to operate or not to operate?
نویسنده
چکیده
Ischemic cerebrovascular disease, a major public health problem, is accompanied, and possibly caused in a large percentage of cases, by extracranial arterial lesions. A rapidly expanding body of surgical litera ture records the success of procedures designed to re pair these lesions along with a decline in recent years in surgical mortality for such procedures. If an area of carotid abnormality is a constant threat to adequate cerebral blood flow, why not remove it? There is no fully documented analysis of replies to this important question, but the present view addresses five areas of study that may result in a postponement or rejection of the decision to operate. These areas are not mutually exclusive; rather, they are variables that interact and should be considered in conjunction.

متن کاملThyroid Nodule Imaging. Status and Limitations.
Thyroid nodules are common, occurring in almost two-thirds of some populations; among these only about 7% are malignant. The most important question with any new discovered thyroid nodule is, “is this malignant?” The main arbiter of malignancy or benignity remains fine needle aspiration and the mainstay of treatment surgery. But given the resources involved, doing an FNAC or surgery in every di...
متن کاملAn Estimation of Required Rotational Torque to Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling Using Rock Engineering Systems
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is widely used in soil and rock engineering. In a variety of conditions, it is necessary to estimate the torque required for performing the reaming operation. Nevertheless, there is not presently a convenient method to accomplish this task. In this paper, to overcome this difficulty based on the basic concepts of rock engineering systems (RES), a model for ...
متن کاملDetermination of Concession Period in Build-Operate-Transfer Projects Using Fuzzy Logic
The build-operate-transfer (BOT) projects are a popular method of privatization of public infrastructure development. There are several risks which might affect a BOT project negatively. Concession period is one of the most important decision variables in arranging a BOT-type contract which should be determined considering the existing risks and uncertainties. A longer concession period is more...
متن کاملA COMPARISON OF PERFORMANCE OF SEVERAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE METHODS FOR ESTIMATION OF REQUIRED ROTATIONAL TORQUE TO OPERATE HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is extensively used in geothechnical engineering. In a variety of conditions it is essential to predict the torque required for performing the reaming operation. Nevertheless, there is presently not a convenient method to accomplish this task. To overcome this problem, in this research, the application of computational intelligence methods for data analysis...
