Radial nerve palsies in the newborn.

چکیده
Although usually omitted in the description of nerve injuries in the newborn, radial nerve palsies are not infrequent. The cause of the paralysis is not clear but the occasional coincidental finding of a patch of subcutaneous fat necrosis over the course of the radial nerve (Lightwood, 1951) suggests the possibility of direct trauma to the nerve. That the injury is not uncommon is supported by the observation of seven infants born in St. Mary's Hospital, Manchester, since 1953 with radial palsy, and an eighth seen by Professor Morris. In view of the scant literature on the subject it was considered worth while recording these cases.

Acute Combined Median and Radial Nerve Palsies after Distal Humeral Shaft Fracture
We report a case of a 29-year-old man who presented with a distal humeral shaft fracture sustained by blunt trauma. Physicalexamination and nerve conduction study were consistent with injury to the median and radial nerves proximal to theelbow. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the humeral shaft fracture with neurolysis of the medianand radial nerves. Repeat electrom...
متن کاملBilateral radial nerve palsy in a newborn.
A boy was born at 42 weeks’ gestation following 4 days of labor. Epidural anesthesia was used. Bilateral wrist drop was noted immediately after delivery (figure 1). Induration with localized erythema was seen symmetrically on the dorsal aspect of both upper limbs (figure 2). Examination was in keeping with isolated bilateral radial nerve palsies. An ultrasound scan of the upper arms revealed sy...
متن کاملRadial nerve palsy in the newborn: a case series.
BACKGROUND Peripheral nerve palsies of the upper extremities presenting at birth can be distressing for families and care providers. It is therefore important to be able to identify patients whose diagnosis is compatible with full recovery so that their families can be reassured. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of all infants presenting with weakness of the upper extremity to our ...
متن کاملHereditary Neuropathy With Liability to Pressure Palsies: A Single-Center Experience in Southern Brazil
The spectrum of clinical and electrophysiological features in hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is broad. We analyze a series of Brazilian patients with HNPP. Correlations between clinical manifestations, laboratory features, electrophysiological analyze, histological and molecular findings were done. In five cases, more than one episode occurred before diagnosis. ...
