Anemia of Aging: A Model of Erythropoiesis in Cancer Patients.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The adverse effects of anemia in cancer patients include fatigue and enhanced chemotherapy-related toxicity. Anemia is particularly threatening for the older person with cancer who can have multiple comorbid conditions that may either cause anemia or aggravate the effects of anemia on other tissues.3 Because the functional reserve of different organ systems becomes progressively restricted with age, the older individual may also be susceptible to the complications of anemia.

Intensification of Anemia by Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Hemodialysis Patients
The excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPTH) is suggested to interfere with normal erythropoiesis. In SHPTH, during chronic renal failure, due to the impairment of erythropoietin synthesis, this effect is more pronounced. In the present study the role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in the severity of anemia was evaluated in hemodialysis patients (n=3...
متن کاملAging and erythropoiesis: current state of knowledge.
Many studies now document the high prevalence of anemia in the elderly and its association with poor outcomes. Study of these anemic patients reveals that in most cases the underlying abnormality is diminished erythropoieis. This analysis outlines some of the salient observations underlying the evolution of current concepts of how aging impacts erythropoiesis, and suggests areas for future expl...
متن کاملThe effect of Continuous Care Model on self-care in patients with colon cancer
Introduction: Colon cancer and its treatments have several signs and symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, lethargy, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, anemia, and eating disorders that self-care is essential to control in these patients. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the continuous care model on self-care in patients with colon cancer. Methods: The present study was an experi...
متن کاملAnemia in Lymphoproliferative Disorders.
The etiologies of anemia in patients with lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) are diverse. Causes such as acute blood loss or deficiencies in iron or vitamins (folate/B12) are considered in the initial evaluation. In many instances, the anemia can be attributed to marrow infiltration by the LPD. Treatment with chemotherapy can suppress erythropoiesis. Other causes that occur more often with LPD ...
متن کاملDefective erythropoiesis in bone marrow is a mechanism of anemia in children with cancer.
Evaluation of the mechanism of anemia in cancer patients might help to select patients for the more efficient use of erythropoietin (EPO, a growth factor for erythroid precursor cells). For this, we investigated whether the production of EPO responds to anemia and the bone marrow responds to EPO appropriately, and whether chronic inflammation is inhibitory to erythropoiesis in anemic cancer chi...
