Clinical Biochemistry

revised thoroughly. Some of the chapters have been entirely re-written and several additions such as the influence of some of the endocrine glands and vitamin B on carbohydrate metabolism, the biochemical aspects of vitamin deficiency, some of the aspects of mineral metabolism, etc., have been made. The change in the title of the book from ' Biochemistry in internal medicine' to ' Clinical Biochemistry' appears to us to be an improvement as the latter expresses the object of the book, viz, the application of biochemical observations in clinical medicine, more forcibly. There can be no doubt that during the last few years biochemistry has made such rapid progress that it has now proved itself to be an important and powerful ally of clinical medicine, not only in the discovery of causes and cure of some important diseases, notably those of metabolism and nutrition, but also in the assessment of the prognosis in a given case. It also helps us considerably in the study of the functional efficiency of certain important organs and systems. The importance of the part which biochemistry plays in the practice of medicine is therefore undisputed. t

Dark Chocolate Intake Acutely Enhances Neutrophil Count in Peripheral Venous Blood
Beside the well-established impact on decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases (1), recent attention has been paid to the relationship between cocoa-containing foods and the immune system (2), showing that dark chocolate consumption enhances the systemic defense against bacterial (3) and viral (4) infections. Hence, the current study aimed at investigating the acute effect of dark chocola...

Warfarin is a vitamin K antagonist that genetic and non-genetic factors affected on its doserequirement in the patients with cardio vascular disease. The aim of this study was whetherthe APOE and VKORC1 polymorphisms influence on warfarin dose requirements in the partof Iranian patients. Blood samples were collected from 86 warfarin-treated patients. Afterextraction of genomic DNA, the VKORC1 (...

Supportive Data for Galectin-3 as a Prognostic Factor in Coronary Artery Disease
Introduction: Galectin-3 is known as a biomarker in patients with heart failure. This protein participates in different mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis including inflammation and plaque formation. This study was conducted to investigate whether this factor could be a predictive biomarker for the severity of atherosclerosis. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 80 patients ...
