STIM and PIXE mapping of diseased cerebral and other tissues

This research is focused on investigating the biochemical mechanisms involved in neurovascular inflammation, cerebral hypoxia and altered cerebral metabolism, with particular focus on their role in the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria (CM) and acute bacterial meningitis (ABM). The pathogenesis of these diseases remains poorly understood, hindering the development of improved therapies. Previous experiments determined a robust sample preparation technique to allow complementary FTIR, Raman, PIXE and STIM measurements on the same tissue sample. This work aims to measure the elemental differences and alterations in tissue density that occur due to infection by CM and ABM using PIXE and STIM mapping.
