Biofilm and orthopaedic implant infection

چکیده
Heledd Havard such as polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) leads to the creation of a protective extracellular matrix that acts as a physical and electrostatic barrier1. Recruitment, proliferation and maturation follow, resulting in the adhesion and incorporation of other microbes. In its early phase of formation, the structure of the biofilm is susceptible to the host immune system and antibiotic penetration but, within one hour, DNA transcription changes alter gene expression5. Proliferation and phenotypic modulation within the biofilm culminates in maturation and dissociation/ disaggregation with dispersal of bacterial cells. Heledd Havard & Jonathan Miles

Cinnamon Oil and Chitosan Coating on Orthopaedic Implant Surface for Prevention of Staphylococcus Epidermidis Biofilm Formation.
S. Epidermidis is among the most frequently isolated microorganisms found in -infection related to implanted devices and the formation of biofilm will be more resistant compared to the planktonic form. This study was carried out to determine the effect of coating on stainless steel orthopaedic implants surfaces with cinnamon oil and chitosan as bioadhesive to prevent biofilms formation of S. Ep...
متن کاملFormation of Propionibacterium acnes biofilms on orthopaedic biomaterials and their susceptibility to antimicrobials.
Failure to treat and eradicate prosthetic hip infection with systemic antibiotic regimens is usually due to the fact that the infection is associated with biofilm formation and that bacterial cells growing within a biofilm exhibit increased resistance to antimicrobial agents. In this in vitro study, we investigated the susceptibility of prosthetic hip Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a silver-impregnated coating to inhibit colonization of orthopaedic implants by biofilm forming methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of a silver-impregnated coating against a biofilm-forming strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP). METHODS A clinical MRSP isolate sourced from a failed canine knee implant was evaluated for biofilm production and used in the present study. Using a standard test method and a clinically approved titanium ...
متن کاملDiabetic Mouse Model of Orthopaedic Implant-Related Staphylococcus Aureus Infection
BACKGROUND Periprosthetic bacterial infections represent one of the most challenging orthopaedic complications that often require implant removal and surgical debridement and carry high social and economical costs. Diabetes is one of the most relevant risk factors of implant-related infection and its clinical occurrence is growing worldwide. The aim of the present study was to test a model of i...
متن کاملEvolving strategies to prevent implant-associated infections.
The consequences of implantassociated infection are significant and usually require revision surgery, with removal of the implant and prolonged antibiotic treatment. Various approaches to reduce the rate of infection have been investigated. Two recent strategies are (1) coating implants with antibiotics and (2) covalently attaching antimicrobial molecules onto the implant surface. The purpose o...
متن کاملMolecular engineering of an orthopaedic implant: from bench to bedside.
The use of metallic implants has revolutionised the practice of orthopaedic surgery. While the safety and biocompatibility of these devices are excellent, a small percentage becomes infected. These infections are due to the formation of a biofilm that harbours bacteria encased in a complex extracellular matrix. The matrix serves as a barrier to immune surveillance as well as limiting the biocid...
