Microscopic and Macroscopic Clustering in Granular Matter

چکیده

Inelastic particles are used to model the behavior of granular media. On the level of individual grains, \inelastic collapse" plays an essential role for clustering in a variety of situations. On a macroscopic level, few-body dynamics can still be relevant. Orientation, form, and compactness of clusters in shear ow depend on microscopic features of the collision dynamics. Under the same external conditions, the scattering behavior of grains can lead to one or the other of two clustering mechanisms. Inelastic collapse has no notable eeect in some cases and is important in others. The practically important case when collisions at small speed are almost elastic is treated with particular emphasis.

Spatial correlations in sheared isothermal liquids: from elastic particles to granular particles.

Spatial correlations in sheared isothermal liquids for both elastic and granular cases are theoretically investigated. Using the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics, correlation functions for both the microscopic scale and the macroscopic scale are obtained. We find the existence of long-range correlations obeying power laws. The validity of our theoretical predictions has been verified from ...

Using infrared thermography to study hydrostatic stress networks in granular materials.

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of granular materials is governed by microscopic features at the particle scale. Photoelasticimetry is a powerful method for measuring shear stresses in particles made from birefringent materials. As a complementary method, we here identify the hydrostatic stress networks through thermoelastic stress analysis using infrared thermographic measurements. Experi...

Universality of slip avalanches in flowing granular matter.

The search for scale-bridging relations in the deformation of amorphous materials presents a current challenge with tremendous applications in material science, engineering and geology. While generic features in the flow and microscopic dynamics support the idea of a universal scaling theory of deformation, direct microscopic evidence remains poor. Here, we provide the first measurement of inte...

Experimental study of the compaction dynamics for two-dimensional anisotropic granular materials.

We present an experimental study of the compaction dynamics for two-dimensional anisotropic granular systems. The compaction dynamics of rods is measured at three different scales: (i) the macroscopic scale through the packing fraction rho, (ii) the mesoscopic scale through both fractions of aligned grains phi(a) and ideally ordered grains phi(io), and (iii) the microscopic scale through both r...

Influence of polydispersity on micromechanics of granular materials.

We study the effect of polydispersity on the macroscopic physical properties of granular packings in two and three dimensions. A mean-field approach is developed to approximate the macroscale quantities as functions of the microscopic ones. We show that the trace of the fabric and stress tensors are proportional to the mean packing properties (e.g., packing fraction, average coordination number...
