چکیده

In the era of high-speed and low-power VLSI circuits, the question of which circuit family is best for a given application has become extremely relevant. From a designer’s perspective, technology miniaturization brings increased parameter variation and decreased reliability, which lead to circuit malfunction. To mitigate the risks of undesirable circuit behavior, a designer has to make decisions not only at the micro-architectural scale, but also at the transistor-level scale. Various emerging technologies and non-conventional circuit families may help alleviate reliability problems and provide better performance. We have developed automated tools that allow designers to select the circuit family that yields the best results in terms of various design metrics for any application. Using our tools and techniques, the circuit choices can be made in a timely manner without in-depth knowledge of every circuit family under consideration. We demonstrate a tool flow that offers significant reduction in the design cycle time. We provide synchronous and asynchronous circuit libraries for designers to evaluate their circuit architectures and explain how this work can be extended to arbitrary types of circuit families for any given technology node. Finally, we evaluate the novel tools using ITC99 benchmark suite and present simulation results for various circuit implementations in terms of throughput, power, process corners, and input statistics.

Implementation of a Low-Power FPGA Based on Synchronous/Asynchronous Hybrid Architecture

This paper presents a low-power FPGA based on mixed synchronous/asynchronous design. The proposed FPGA consists of several sections which consist of logic blocks, and each section can be used as either a synchronous circuit or an asynchronous circuit according to its workload. An asynchronous circuit is power-efficient for a low-workload section since it does not require the clock tree which al...

Synchronous Design Flow for Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous Systems

– In this paper, we introduce an efficient design flow for Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous systems, which can be used by designers without prior knowledge of asynchronous circuits. The design flow starts with a high-level description model of the system in Simulink and ends with a hardware implementation in an FPGA or a standard-cell ASIC. We have developed a tool in MATLAB, so that t...

Towards a Framework for the Distributed Simulation of Asynchronous Hardware

Synchronous VLSI design is approaching a critical point, with clock distribution becoming an increasingly costly and complicated issue and power consumption rapidly emerging as a major concern. The last decade has witnessed a resurgence of interest in asynchronous logic which promises to liberate digital design from the inherent problems of synchronous systems. This activity has revealed a need...

Comparison of a Ring On-Chip Network and a Code-Division Multiple-Access On-Chip Network

Two network-on-chip (NoC) designs are examined and compared in this paper. One design applies a bidirectional ring connection scheme, while the other design applies a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) connection scheme. Both of the designs apply globally asynchronous locally synchronous (GALS) scheme in order to deal with the issue of transferring data in a multiple-clockdomain environment o...

Design flow for Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous Systems using Conventional Synchronous Design Tools

– We propose a design flow for Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous systems, which can be used by designers without prior knowledge of asynchronous circuits. The design flow uses conventional synchronous design tools and we have developed a tool to generate and handle the asynchronous circuits in the flow. The design flow starts with high-level model of the system behavior and proceeds dow...
