چکیده

We report the detection of Hα emission in the T dwarf (methane brown dwarf) 2MASSW J1237392+652615 over three days using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. The measured line flux, log(LHα/Lbol) = −4.3, is roughly consistent with early M dwarf activity levels and inconsistent with decreasing activity trends in late M and L dwarfs. Similar emission is not seen in two other T dwarfs. We speculate on several mechanisms that may be responsible for emission, including a strong magnetic field, continuous flaring, acoustic heat generation, and a close (a ∼ 4 20 RJup) interacting binary, with the cooler component overflowing its Roche lobe. We suggest that the M9.5Ve PC 0025+0447 could be a warm analogue to 2MASS J1237+65, and may be powered by the latter mechanism. Detection of H Emission in a Methane (t-type) Brown Dwarf

We report the detection of H emission in the T dwarf (methane brown dwarf) 2MASSW J1237392+652615 over three days using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. The measured line ux, log(L H /L bol) = ?4.3, is roughly consistent with early M dwarf activity levels and inconsistent with decreasing activity trends in late M and L dwarfs. Band Methane Features in an L Dwarf , 2 MASS 0920

We have obtained near-infrared spectra of three L dwarfs discovered by 2MASS, 1506+13 (L3), 1507-16 (L5), and 0920+35 (L6.5). From the comparison of the H and K band spectra of these L dwarfs, we have found the presence of methane absorption in 0920+35. This implies that detectable methane absorption in the H and K bands, usually considered the signature of a T dwarf, can be present in objects ...

The 2mass Wide-field T Dwarf Search. Iv. Hunting out T Dwarfs with Methane Imaging

We present first results from a major program of methane filter photometry for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. The definition of a new methane filter photometric system is described. A recipe is provided for the differential calibration of methane imaging data using existing TwoMicron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry. We show that these filters are effective in discriminating T dwarfs from ot...

Discovery of a Very Nearby Brown Dwarf to the Sun: a Methane Rich Brown Dwarf Companion to the Low Mass Star Scr

We present VLT/NACO SDI images of the very nearby star SCR 1845-6357 (hereafter SCR 1845). SCR 1845 is a recently discovered (Hambly et al. 2004) M8.5 star just 3.85 pc from the Sun (Henry et al. 2006). Using the capabilities of the unique SDI device, we discovered a substellar companion to SCR 1845 at a separation of 4.5 AU (1.170”±0.003” on the sky) and fainter by 3.57±0.057 mag in the 1.575 ...

Methane Opacities in T Dwarf Atmospheres

We present the current status of PHOENIX model atmospheres for dwarfs of the spectral type T, typical for older field brown dwarfs and low-mass brown dwarfs. The results are based on new predictions of the CH4 line opacities from theoretical calculations with the STDS software package, extrapolating to transitions from rotational levels up to J = 40. While individual line positions and strength...
