چکیده

We develop a detailed and comprehensive description of neutrino oscillations driven by the 1-3 mixing in the matter of the Earth. The description is valid for the realistic (PREM) Earth density profile in the whole range of nadir angles and for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. It can be applied to oscillations of atmospheric and accelerator neutrinos. The results are presented in the form of neutrino oscillograms of the Earth, i.e. the contours of equal oscillation probabilities in the neutrino energy–nadir angle plane. A detailed physics interpretation of the oscillograms, which includes the MSW peaks, parametric ridges, local maxima, zeros and saddle points, is given in terms of the amplitude and phase conditions. Precise analytic formulas for the probabilities are obtained. We study the dependence of the oscillation pattern on θ13 and find, in particular, that the transition probability P > 1/2 appears for sin 2θ13 as small as ∼ 0.009. We consider the dependence of the oscillation pattern on the matter density profile and comment on the possibility of the oscillation tomography of the Earth.

Neutrino oscillograms of the Earth: effects of 1-2 mixing and CP-violation

We develop a comprehensive description of three flavor neutrino oscillations inside the Earth in terms of neutrino oscillograms in the whole range of nadir angles and for energies above 0.1 GeV. The effects of the 1-2 mass splitting and mixing as well the interference of the 1-2 and 1-3 modes of oscillations are quantified. The 1-2 mass splitting and mixing lead to the appearance, apart from th...

Neutrino oscillograms of the Earth and CP violation in neutrino oscillations

Neutrino oscillograms of the Earth are contours of constant oscillation or survival probabilities in the plane of neutrino energy and nadir or zenith angle of neutrino trajectory. They encode information on both the neutrino parameters and the Earth density profile and proved to be a very useful and illuminating tool for analyzing neutrino oscillations in the Earth. The oscillograms exhibit a v...

Possible maximal mixing seen in the oscillations of the atmospheric neutrinos has led to postulate of a μ-τ symmetry which interchanges νμ and ντ . We argue that such symmetry need not be special to neutrinos but can be extended to all fermions. The assumption that all fermion mass matrices are approximately invariant under interchange of the second and the third generation fields is shown to b...

Neutrino Masses and Mixing: Where We Stand and Where We Are Going

Our present understanding of neutrino masses and mixing comes from the interpretation of data on solar and atmospheric neutrinos as well as the results from the LSND experiment in terms of neutrino oscillations [1]. If neutrinos have masses, flavour is mixed in the CC interactions of the leptons, and a leptonic mixing matrix will appear analogous to the CKM [2] matrix for the quarks. The possib...

We take up the point of view that Yukawa couplings can be either 0 or 1, and the mass patterns of fermions are generated purely from the structure of the Yukawa matrices. We utilize such neutrino as well as charged leptonic textures which lead to (maximal) mixing angles of π/4 in each sector for relevant transitions. The combined leptonic CKM mixing angles are π/4 ± π/4 which lead to very small...
