Discs of Satellites: the new dwarf spheroidals

چکیده
The spatial distributions of the most recently discovered ultra faint dwarf satellites around the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy are compared to the previously reported discs-of-satellites (DoS) of their host galaxies. In our investigation we pay special attention to the selection bias introduced due to the limited sky coverage of SDSS. We find that the new Milky Way satellite galaxies follow closely the DoS defined by the more luminous dwarfs, thereby further emphasizing the statistical significance of this feature in the Galactic halo. We also notice a deficit of satellite galaxies with Galactocentric distances larger than 100 kpc that are away from the disc-of-satellites of the Milky Way. In the case of Andromeda, we obtain similar results, naturally complementing our previous finding and strengthening the notion that the discs-ofsatellites are optical manifestations of a phase-space correlation of satellite galaxies.

Dwarf spheroidals with tidal tails and structure formation
Recent N-Body simulations have shown that dIrrs evolve into dSphs owing to the strong tidal perturbation of the Milky Way. Satellites whose dark matter halos have a core or an NFW profile with a concentration c < 5 undergo severe stripping even on low eccentricity orbits and their remnants have projected stellar profiles that become flat at large radii as observed in some of the dSphs. Satellit...
متن کاملThe Neutrino Hypothesis for Dark Matter in Dwarf Spheroidals
The theoretical expectation of the high mass of > 400 eV for the particles constituting the dark matter in dwarf-spheroidals as an artifact of the implicit assumption that the density of particles vanishes at the visible edge. On the contrary if our Galaxy and the dwarf-spheroidals are embedded in a neutrino condensation of the dimensions of the cluster then mv 10 eV can accommodate all the obs...
متن کاملAre " Dwarf " Ellipticals Genuine Ellipticals?
We review the systematic properties of “dwarf” elliptical (dE) galaxies, focussing on the relation between “normal” and “dwarf” ellipticals. In recent years, this relation has been described as “dichotomy” – based essentially on a discontinuity in central surface brightness. We show that, outside of 300 pc from the centre, the Sérsic profile parameters vary continuously from “normal” to “dwarf”...
متن کاملModeling Star Formation in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: a Case for Extended Dark Matter Halos
We propose a simple model for the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, in which stars are assumed to have formed from isothermal gas in hydrostatic equilibrium inside extended dark matter halos. After expelling the leftover gas, the stellar system undergoes a dynamical relaxation inside the dark matter halo. These models can adequately describe the observed properties of three (Draco, Sculpt...
متن کاملPossible evidence for MeV dark matter in dwarf spheroidals.
The observed 511 keV emission from the galactic bulge could be due to very light (MeV) annihilating dark matter particles. To distinguish this hypothesis from conventional astrophysical sources, we study dwarf spheroidals in the region observed by the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory/SPI such as Sagittarius. As these galaxies have comparatively few stars, the prospects for 511 ke...
