چکیده
by T.J.R. Francis, D.J. Smith and J.J. W. Sykes, Institute of Naval Medicine, Hampshire, England. The current means by which we classify decompression sickness dates back only 30 years to the experience gained during the construction of the Dartford Tunnel in London. Golding et al [1] proposed a system for decompression sickness based upon perceived severity of the cases which arose in the caisson workers employed in the construction of the tunnel. Only symptoms considered sufficiently severe to bring the man [sic] back for treatment were considered to be decompression sickness. They divided the cases into two types: Type 1, or simple 'bends' and Type II, which were more serious or complicated cases which displayed vertigo, shock, paralysis, epigastric pain and shortness of breath. Their system is still in use today essentially unchanged. Traditionally, decompression sickness has been distinguished from the barotraumata and a summary of the current classification of the decompression disorders is presented in Table 1.

Brain multi-infarct and decompression sickness
Scuba diving is associated with an important risk of developing decompression sickness secondary to formation of gas bubbles inside the body. The latter is formed mainly by nitrogen in the body on the diver’s way to the surface (1,2). In some cases, it might injure the central nervous system. Several decompression cases that have been associated with neurologic symptoms are described in the l...
متن کاملA New Measure of Decompression Sickness in the Rat
In this study we assessed the reliability of a tilting-board grip score as a measure of decompression sickness in rats. In experiments using a hyperbaric compression/decompression protocol, rats were observed for signs of decompression sickness and their grip strength measured on a tilting particle board hinged to a metal frame. Angles at which rats lost grip were converted to gravitational vec...
متن کامل[Early detection of asymptomatic dysbaric osteonecrosis of the shoulder after type 1 decompression sickness: a case report].
INTRODUCTION Dysbaric osteonecrosis is a rare illness in professional divers and compressed-air workers. The correlation between dysbaric osteonecrosis and previous decompression sickness with osteoarthromuscular pain (type 1 decompression sickness) remains a controversial subject. The probability for ischemic lesions detected with MRI to turn into osteonecrosis after decompression sickness is ...
متن کاملPresumed venous infarction in spinal decompression sickness.
We describe the serial MR imaging findings in a patient with spinal decompression sickness. In the acute phase, the spinal cord was swollen, with increased T2 signal in the posterior part of the column; 1 month later, marked contrast enhancement was noted in the same location; and 2 months later, the swelling and T2 signal had decreased. MR imaging may facilitate the early diagnosis of spinal d...
متن کاملTwo unusual presentations of probable decompression sickness after deep mixed-gas recreational diving.
We present two unusual presentations of decompression sickness manifesting at previous injury sites after deep mixed-gas recreational diving. While previous injury is often cited as a predisposing factor in decompression illness, formal case reports of this phenomenon are rare in the diving literature.
