چکیده

We describe herein how a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) can be used to measure wetting behavior and sliding friction levels of adsorbed films and a brief summary of the status of the fundamental energy dissipative mechanisms that give rise to friction in these systems. The relation between sliding friction values, diffusion coefficients, and film lubricity is next described. Finally, as a specific case example, QCM measurements of the uptake and sliding friction levels of adsorbed ethanol, trifluoroethanol (TFE) and pentanol films on silicon, aluminum and perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS) treated substrates are reported and analyzed. These systems are of interest to the silicon microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) community, whose progress has been limited by tribological issues.

Nanotribological Behavior of Carbon Based Thin Films: Friction and Lubricity Mechanisms at the Nanoscale

The use of materials with very attractive friction and wear properties has raised much attention in research and industrial sectors. A wide range of tribological applications, including rolling and sliding bearings, machining, mechanical seals, biomedical implants and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), require thin films with high mechanical strength, chemical inertness, broad optical trans...

Lubricity of Surface Hydrogel Layers

Many biological interfaces provide low friction aqueous lubrication through the generation and maintenance of a high water content polymeric surface gel. The lubricity of such gels is often attributed to their high water content, high water permeability, low elastic modulus, and their ability to promote a water film at the sliding interface. Such biological systems are frequently characterized ...

Gemini Interfaces in Aqueous Lubrication with Hydrogels

The sliding interfaces found in the body— within the eyes, the digestive system, and the articulating joints, for example—are soft and permeable yet extremely robust, possessing low friction. The common elements among these systems are hydrophilic biopolymer networks that provide physical surfaces, elasticity, and fluid permeability. Stiff, impermeable probes are traditionally used to assess th...

Nanofluidics: viscous dissipation in layered liquid films.

We studied the layer-by-layer collapse of molecularly thin films of a model lubricant confined between two atomically smooth substrates. The dynamics of the consecutive expulsion of four molecular layers were found to slow down with decreasing film thickness but showed no evidence for confinement-induced solidification. Using a hydrodynamic model, we show that the sliding friction of liquid lay...

Abstract Submitted for the MAR05 Meeting of The American Physical Society Preparation and Friction Property of Dendritic Thin Film

Submitted for the MAR05 Meeting of The American Physical Society Preparation and Friction Property of Dendritic Thin Film QING ZHANG, LYNDEN ARCHER, Cornell University — To investigate the effect of film structure on their friction properties, thin films with dendritic structure were prepared on silicon surfaces by step-growth propagation, and their friction properties were studied by AFM. The ...
