A rationalised virological electron microscope specimen testing policy. PHLS North West Viral Gastroenteritis and Electron Microscopy Subcommittee.

چکیده
The aim of this project was to produce guidance for a rationalised virological electron microscopy specimen testing policy for PHLS North West, to facilitate centralisation of a groupwide diagnostic electron microscopy service on a single site. Careful specimen selection to limit numbers and the groupwide use of commercially available enzyme immunoassays has allowed PHLS North West to reduce the number of specimens prepared for electron microscopy. The rationalised virological electron microscopy specimen testing policy has enabled a diagnostic electron microscopy service to be provided from a single site with a manageable workload. Implementation of this specimen testing policy by PHLS North West has been successful and may be applicable to other laboratories (or groups of laboratories) to maximise the use of expensive electron microscopy facilities.

متن کاملRationalised virological electron microscope specimen testing policy.
I read the two letters from McCaughey and Curry and their respective colleagues 1 2 with astonishment. Their debate on a policy for electron microscopy (EM) use reminded me of those mediaeval ones about the number of angels that could dance on the head of a pin. Interesting debate, pity it missed the point. They failed, I think, to address three important aspects: (1) The nature of virus diagno...
متن کاملDevelopment of Direct Sandwich ELISA test for Detection of Rotavirus in Clinical Specimen
Background and Aims: Rotaviruses are one of the main causative agents of acute viral gastroenteritis in both young human and animals. Several methods have been used for diagnosis of rotavirus infection. Most of these methods are not easily available in Iran. Methods: In our study attempt was made to develop a method which could replace the commercially imported Kit. Rota virus was purified and...
متن کاملEnzyme linked immunosorbent assay for detecting adenoviruses in stool specimens: comparison with electron microscopy and isolation.
A commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of adenoviruses in stool samples was compared with the use of electron microscopy and isolation in Graham 293 cells. Although specific, the ELISA was less sensitive than both electron microscopy and isolation. The ELISA had an overall sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 100%. The sensitivity was related to the amount of vi...
متن کاملAccurate virus quantitation using a Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) detector in a scanning electron microscope.
A method for accurate quantitation of virus particles has long been sought, but a perfect method still eludes the scientific community. Electron Microscopy (EM) quantitation is a valuable technique because it provides direct morphology information and counts of all viral particles, whether or not they are infectious. In the past, EM negative stain quantitation methods have been cited as inaccur...
