A Shadowing Lemma Approach to Global Error Analysis for Initial Value ODEs

چکیده
The authors show that for dynamical systems that possess a type of piecewise hyperbolicity in which there is no decrease in the number of stable modes, the global error in a numerical approximation may be obtained as a reasonable magnification of the local error. In particular, under certain conditions the authors prove the existence of a trajectory on an infinite time interval of the given ordinary differential equation uniformly close to a given numerically computed orbit of the same differential equation by allowing for different initial conditions. For finite time intervals a general result is proved for obtaining a posteriori bounds on the global error based on computable quantities and on finding and bounding the norm of a right inverse of a particular matrix. Two methods for finding and bounding/estimating the norm of a right inverse are considered. One method is based upon the choice of the pseudo or generalized inverse. The other method is based upon solving multipoint boundary value problems (BVPs) with the choice ofboundary conditions motivated by the piecewise hyperbolicity concept. Numerical results are presented for the logistic equation, the forced pendulum equation, and the space discretized Chafee-Infante equation. Key words, numerical initial value ODEs, global error analysis, piecewise hyperbolicity AMS subject classification. 65L

Local and Global Existence of Multiple Waves near Formal Approximations
The formation of multiple wave fronts is important in applications of singularly perturbed parabolic systems. These solutions can be effectively constructed by formal asymptotic methods. When truncated to a certain order in 2, they become formal approximations of solutions to the given system. The precision of a formal approximation is judged by the smallness of the residual error in each regul...
متن کاملExact Implementation of Multiple Initial Conditions in the DQ Solution of Higher-Order ODEs
The differential quadrature method (DQM) is one of the most elegant and useful approximate methods for solving initial and/or boundary value problems. It is easy to use and also straightforward to implement. However, the conventional DQM is well-known to have some difficulty in implementing multiple initial and/or boundary conditions at a given discrete point. To overcome this difficulty, this ...

In this article, we propose and analyze a computational method for numerical solution of general two point boundary value problems. Method is tested on problems to ensure the computational eciency. We have compared numerical results with results obtained by other method in literature. We conclude that propose method is computationally ecient and eective.

متن کاملDefect Sampling in Global Error Estimation for ODEs and Method-Of-Lines PDEs Using Adjoint Methods
The importance of good estimates of the defect in the numerical solution of initial value problem ordinary differential equations is considered in the context of global error estimation by using adjoint-equation based methods. In the case of solvers based on the fixed leading coefficient backward differentiation formulae, the quality of defect estimates is shown to play a major role in the reli...
