چکیده

Designing robotic behaviours capable of initiating an interruption will be extremely important as robots increasingly interact with people. In this paper, we evaluate a minimal set of physical and nonverbal cues that can be exhibited by a robot to initiate robot-human interruption: (a) speed of motion, (b) gaze, (c) head movement, d) rotation and (e) proximity to the person. We then present a set of studies. For requirements gathering, we started with observations of interruption between humans, with a human actor attempting to interrupt other humans while being constrained to use only a set of behavioural cues that could be mimicked by a simple nonverbal robot. Next, we programmed a robot to exhibit these social nonverbal cues, and tested their feasibility in two separate pilot user evaluations. Finally, we performed an extensive user study of robotic nonverbal interruption across interruption scenarios. People were able to interpret robot behaviour as interruptions, and we identified the dominant cues people used to relate robotic behaviour to interruption urgency. Author

Can Robots Manifest Personality?: An Empirical Test of Personality Recognition, Social Responses, and Social Presence in Human–Robot Interaction

Personality is an essential feature for creating socially interactive robots. Studies on this dimension will facilitate enhanced human–robot interaction (HRI). Using AIBO, a social robotic pet developed by Sony, we examined the issue of personality in HRI. In this gender-balanced 2 (AIBO personality: introvert vs. extrovert) by 2 (participant personality: introvert vs. extrovert) between-subjec...

Exploring Social Interaction Between Robots and People

Robots are rapidly advancing toward becoming autonomous and skilled entities in a wide range of environments, and it is likely that more and more people will soon be interacting with robots in their everyday lives. As this happens, we believe that it is crucial that robots are designed to be easy to use and understand, reducing the requirement for people and environments to adapt to the robot. ...

Toward Agents That Can Learn Nonverbal Interactive Behavior

Humans are social agents and the social dimension is an important aspect of human cognition. One challenge facing the realization of artifacts and artificial agents that posses humanlike cognition abilities is to implement human-like interactive capabilities into them. Natural Language Processing is one of the earliest applications of AI techniques because of the importance of language in shapi...

Visual Estimation of Attentive Cues in HRI: The Case of Torso and Head Pose

Capturing visual human-centered information is a fundamental input source for effective and successful human-robot interaction (HRI) in dynamic multi-party social settings. Torso and head pose, as forms of nonverbal communication, support the derivation people’s focus of attention, a key variable in the analysis of human behaviour in HRI paradigms encompassing social aspects. Towards this goal,...
