Kinetic evolution and acceleration of the solar wind

چکیده
We investigate the effects of kinetic waveparticle interactions on the solar wind using a global hybrid model. The model follows the evolution of the particle distributions along an inhomogeneous field line under the influence of wave-particle interactions, an ambipolar electric field that is consistent with the particle distributions themselves, and Coulomb collisions. This represents the “first results” of global evolutionary study of the solar wind that take into account these kinetic effects. The model can account for the bulk acceleration of the solar wind, the preferential heating of the helium ions over the protons, as well as the occasionally observed double-peaked proton velocity distributions.

Wave Modeling of the Solar Wind
The acceleration and heating of the solar wind have been studied for decades using satellite observations and models. However, the exact mechanism that leads to solar wind heating and acceleration is poorly understood. In order to improve the understanding of the physical mechanisms that are involved in these processes a combination of modeling and observational analysis is required. Recent mod...
متن کاملThe effect of a current free double layer below the photosphere on the acceleration of the solar wind Running head: A sub-photospheric CFDL and the acceleration of the solar wind
Neither the collisional hydrodynamic nor the collisionless kinetic models have yet been able to fully explain the acceleration of the fast solar wind without ad hoc assumptions of additional energy input or suprathermal electron populations at the base of the models in the lower corona. Separate research has shown that plasma naturally forms a Current Free Double Layer when expanding into a low...
متن کاملKinetic Models of Solar Wind Electrons, Protons and Heavy Ions
In the present chapter, we describe the recent results obtained in the development of solar wind models using the kinetic approach. We show how the solution of the evolution equation is used to determine the velocity distribution function (VDF) of the solar wind particles and their moments. The solutions depend on the approximations and assumptions made in the development of the models. We desc...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Solutions to Diffusion-Like Equations: A Practical Application of the Itô Calculus
In the process of developing a Monte Carlo kinetic code for the acceleration and heating of ions and electrons in the solar wind, I have encountered at least two pieces of physics that are diffusive in velocity space. (These processes are Coulomb collisions and quasi-linear wave-particle interactions.) When modeling the evolution of individual particles, one thus needs to apply some degree of r...
متن کاملA heliospheric hybrid model: hydrodynamic plasma flow and kinetic cosmic ray transport
In this paper we present a new five particle species hybrid model for calculating cosmic ray particle transport and acceleration in a dynamic heliospheric environment. In particular the effects of solar cycle related changes in the solar wind speed on the heliospheric geometry, solar wind flow and cosmic ray distribution are discussed, when a polarecliptic asymmetry at the inner boundary is mod...
