Adenosine deaminase activity in tuberculous pericarditis.

چکیده
Adenosine deaminase (Enzymes Commission No 3.5.4.4) is an enzyme capable of catalysing the catabolism of purine bases. Previous studies have shown that this enzyme may be useful in recognition of a tuberculous aetiology of pleural, peritoneal, or meningeal effusions.-̀ s Adenosine deaminase assay is a simple, sensitive, and specific diagnostic procedure in these conditions but its use in diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis has not previously been reported.

Adenosine deaminase activity--more than a diagnostic tool in tuberculous pericarditis.
AIM To improve the understanding of factors that influence adenosine deaminase ( ADA) activity in large pericardial effusions. METHODS A prospective study was carried out at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, South Africa. Patients underwent echocardiographically guided pericardiocentesis. ADA activity, as well as biochemistry, haematology, cytology, and in some cases, histology, were determined. H...
متن کاملThe usefulness of adenosine deaminase in the diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity usefulness in the diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis (TP), comparing its value with pericardial effusions (PE) caused by other pericardial diseases. A retrospective case-control study was conducted with nine cases of TP and 39 other than TP diseases (12 neoplastic, 11 septic and 16 unknown origin). Every patie...
متن کاملEvaluation of QuantiFERON -TB Gold in Diagnosis of Tuberculous Pericardial Effusion
Background: Prompt treatment of tuberculous pericarditis can save lives, but definite diagnosis requires detection and isolation of the tubercle bacilli from pericardial fluid and/or biopsy which is often delayed and difficult. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic role of QuantiFERON -TB Gold test (QFT-G) as a rapid non invasive immunological assay in diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis wit...
متن کاملTuberculous pericarditis.
BACKGROUND The incidence of tuberculous pericarditis is increasing in Africa as a result of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. The primary objective of this article was to review and summarize the literature on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of tuberculous pericarditis. METHODS AND RESULTS We searched MEDLINE (January 1966 to May 2005) and the Cochrane Library (Issu...
متن کاملCaffeine effect on adenosine deaminase catalysis: A new look at the effect of caffeine on adenosine deaminase activity
The effect of physiological concentrations of caffeine (purified from Persian tea) on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity at physiological and pathological concentrations of adenosine (as substrate) in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.3) at 37°C was investigated, using UV-VIS spectroscopy. ADA exhibited a bi-phasic activity behavior and both phases showed positive cooperativities indicating adenosine...
