چکیده

In this paper kernel estimates of the joint and conditional probability density functions are used to generate synthetic streamflow sequences. Streamflow is assumed to be a Markov process with time dependence characterized by a multivariate probability density function. Kernel methods are used to estimate this multivariate density function. Simulation proceeds by sequentially resampling from the conditional density function derived from the kernel estimate of the underlying multivariate probability density function. This is a nonparametric method for the synthesis of streamflow that is datadriven and avoids prior assumptions as to the form of dependence (e.g., linear or nonlinear) and the form of the probability density functions (e.g., Gaussian). We show, using synthetic examples with known underlying models, that the nonparametric method presented is more flexible than the conventional models used in stochastic hydrology and is capable of reproducing both linear and nonlinear dependence. The effectiveness of this model is illustrated through its application to simulation of monthly streamflow from the Beaver River in Utah.

Disaggregation procedures for stochastic hydrology based on nonparametric density estimation

Synthetic simulation of streamflow sequences is important for the analysis of water supply reliability. Disaggregation models are an important component of the stochastic streamflow generation methodology. They provide the ability to simulate multiseason and multisite streamflow sequences that preserve statistical properties at multiple timescales or space scales. In recent papers we have sugge...

Statistical–Dynamical Approach for Streamflow Modeling at Malakal, Sudan, on the White Nile River

The upper White Nile Basin above Malakal, Sudan, is considered to be one of the most complicated and diverse hydrologic settings on Earth. Accurately depicting and predicting the streamflow at Malakal is essential for water managers considering Nile Basin-wide initiatives and potential large-scale projects. Dynamical, statistical, and combination models are assessed for their ability to predict...

THE COMPARISON OF TWO METHOD NONPARAMETRIC APPROACH ON SMALL AREA ESTIMATION (CASE: APPROACH WITH KERNEL METHODS AND LOCAL POLYNOMIAL REGRESSION)

Small Area estimation is a technique used to estimate parameters of subpopulations with small sample sizes.  Small area estimation is needed  in obtaining information on a small area, such as sub-district or village.  Generally, in some cases, small area estimation uses parametric modeling.  But in fact, a lot of models have no linear relationship between the small area average and the covariat...

Bayesian Inference and Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods Applied to Streamflow Forecasting

In this work we propose a Bayesian approach for the parameter estimation problem of stochastic autoregressive models of order p, AR(p), applied to the streamflow forecasting problem. Procedures for model selection, forecasting and robustness evaluation through Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulation techniques are also presented. The proposed approach is compared with the classical one by Bo...

پیش‌بینی خشکسالی هیدرولوژیک با استفاده از سری‌های زمانی

INTRODUCTION Hydrologic drought in the sense of deficient river flow is defined as the periods that river flow does not meet the needs of planned programs for system management. Drought is generally considered as periods with insignificant precipitation, soil moisture and water resources for sustaining and supplying the socioeconomic activities of a region. Thus, it is difficult to give a univ...
