Influence of Land Use Land Cover on Cyclone Track Prediction – A Study During Aila Cyclone

چکیده
Land-surface processes are one of the important drivers for weather and climate systems over the tropics. Realistic representation of land surface processes in mesoscale models over the region will help accurate simulation of numerical forecasts. The present study examines the influence of Land Use/ Land Cover Change (LULC) on the forecasting of cyclone intensity and track prediction using Mesoscale Model (MM5). Gridded land use/land cover data set over the Indian region compatible with the MM5 model were generated from Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-P6) Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) for the year 2007-2008. A case study of simulation of ‘Aila’ cyclone has been considered to see the impact of these two sets of LULC data with the use of MM5 model. Results of the study indicated that incorporation of current land use/land cover data sets in mesoscale model provides better forecasting of cyclonic

Sensitivity of inland decay of North Atlantic tropical cyclones to soil parameters
Using the HURDAT best track analysis of track and intensity of tropical cyclones that made landfall over the continental United States during the satellite era (1980–2005), we analyze the role of land surface variables on the cyclone decay process. The land surface variables considered in the present study included soil parameters (soil heat capacity and its surrogate soil bulk density), roughn...

A method is developed to adjust the Kaplan and DeMaria tropical cyclone inland wind decay model for storms that move over narrow landmasses. The basic assumption that the wind speed decay rate after landfall is proportional to the wind speed is modified to include a factor equal to the fraction of the storm circulation that is over land. The storm circulation is defined as a circular area with ...

Accurate prediction of track and intensity of land-falling tropical cyclones is of the great importance in weather prediction in making an effective tropical cyclone warning. This study examines the impact of initial condition on real time prediction of Bay of Bengal cyclone Viyaru. For this purpose, the customized version of Advanced Research core of Weather Research and Forecasting (ARW-WRF) ...

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...
متن کاملEvolution of Tropical Cyclone Characteristics
The long-term goals are to understand how variabilities in the large-scale atmospheric environment and the internal tropical cyclone structure influence tropical cyclone track and intensity characteristics and define how these influences differ between developing, mature, and decaying tropical cyclones. During the initial stages of tropical cyclone development, structure and track characteristi...
