چکیده

2014 Germs of cholesteric liquids were studied in classical mixtures of nematic compounds (MBBA, PAA) with a twisting substance (cholesterol benzoate). These germs were also studied with different polymers of biological interest : synthetic polypeptides (PBLG), nucleic acids (DNA) and polysaccharides (xanthan). Germs are either spherical or elongated with a uniform orientation of layers; there are spherulites which are intermediate between these two types. The molecular orientations are continuous in the bulk of all germs, even in the presence of a disclination radius. In this case a continuous model of the disclination core is presented The whole topology of germs is discussed and modelled The only discontinuities are to be found at the interface only in the case of definite angular conditions. The occurrence of spherulites in biological systems is reviewed J. Physique 45 (1984) 1899-1923 DTCEMBRE 1984,

A biological system producing a self-assembling cholesteric protein liquid crystal.

The protein in the oothecal glands of praying mantids (Sphodromantis tenuidentata, Miomantis monacha) exists in the form of lamellar liquid crystalline spherulites, which coalesce as they flow out of a punctured gland tubule. Electron micrographs of sections of these spherulites after fixation show parabolic patterns of an electron-light component, set in a continuous matrix of protein. Such pa...

Tactoidal shell defects in poly (γ-benzyl-D-glutamate) liquid crystals

2014 Under certain conditions, tactoidal shell defects (TSD’s) can be produced in magnetically oriented samples of poly (03B3-benzyl-D-glutamate) liquid crystals. Their shape is reminiscent of liquid crystalline droplets or tactoids found in various biphasic colloidal systems and solutions of plant viruses. In contrast to tactoids, however, TSD’s form a boundary surface which separates two regi...

Colloidal cholesteric liquid crystal in spherical confinement

The organization of nanoparticles in constrained geometries is an area of fundamental and practical importance. Spherical confinement of nanocolloids leads to new modes of packing, self-assembly, phase separation and relaxation of colloidal liquids; however, it remains an unexplored area of research for colloidal liquid crystals. Here we report the organization of cholesteric liquid crystal for...

Organization of Twisting Lamellar Crystals in Birefringent Banded Polymer Spherulites: A Mini-Review

In this mini-review, we summarize the evidences of lamellar twisting in the birefringent banded polymer spherulites demonstrated by various characterization techniques, such as polarized optical microscopy, real-time atomic force microscopy, micro-focus wide angle X-ray diffraction, etc. The real-time observation of lamellar growth under atomic force microscopy unveiled the fine details of lame...

Morphological Control of Polymer Spherulites via Manipulating Radial Lamellar Organization upon Evaporative Crystallization: A Mini Review

Various spherulites or spherulitic crystals are widely encountered in polymeric materials when crystallized from viscous melts or concentrated solutions. However, the microstructures and growth processes are quite complicated and remain unclear and, thus, the formation mechanisms are rather elusive. Here, diverse kinds of spherulitic growths and patterns of typical polyesters via evaporative cr...
