چکیده

1. Despite the range of threats to springs and the number of spring-endemic species, studies of temporal changes in the fauna of springs have rarely been reported. Changes in the fish of 22 Oklahoma (USA) springs were compared among surveys in 1981, 1982, and 2001. 2. Twenty-year assemblage differences were correlated with physical alteration of specific springs and stocking of native fish, which was made possible by past habitat changes that produced pools. Physical alteration of springs is a major ongoing threat to Oklahoma springs. 3. Variation in spring fish assemblages among the three surveys was apparently affected by fish movement in and out of springs, and the greater rain-induced connectivity between springs and streams during one year. 4. Although flow reduction is a commonly cited threat to springs, there was little evidence of flow reduction impacts in this study because Oklahoma springs may have been affected prior to 1981 and high-flow springs, which most often contain fish, were in areas with low groundwater water use. Inland Waters of Samothraki Island (Greece): Exploratory Ecological Assessment

Samothraki is a northern Aegean island with poorly studied inland waters. River features show a high degree of naturalness; lotic, lentic and riparian conditions exhibit significant perennial flows with waterfalls, pools and ancient riparian woodlands. In this study, we document surface and ground water quality status based on recent field observations, data collection and analyses. The island ...

A new genus and species of stygobiontic dytiscid beetle, Comaldessus stygius (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Bidessini) from Comal Springs, Texas

A new genus and species of stygobiontic bidessine dytiscid beetle, Comaldessus stygius, from Comal Springs, Texas, is described and compared with the proposed sister epigean genus Uuarus and the only other known stygobiontic bidessine water beetles, Trogloguignotus concii Sanfilippo from Venezuela and Uvarus chappuisi (Peschet) from Africa. Distinctive characters of the adult are illustrated wi...

First records of Canis dirus and Smilodon fatalis from the late Pleistocene Tule Springs local fauna, upper Las Vegas Wash, Nevada

Late Pleistocene groundwater discharge deposits (paleowetlands) in the upper Las Vegas Wash north of Las Vegas, Nevada, have yielded an abundant and diverse vertebrate fossil assemblage, the Tule Springs local fauna (TSLF). The TSLF is the largest open-site vertebrate fossil assemblage dating to the Rancholabrean North American Land Mammal Age in the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert. Over...

Desert Springs: Deep Phylogeographic Structure in an Ancient Endemic Crustacean (Phreatomerus latipes)

Desert mound springs of the Great Artesian Basin in central Australia maintain an endemic fauna that have historically been considered ubiquitous throughout all of the springs. Recent studies, however, have shown that several endemic invertebrate species are genetically highly structured and contain previously unrecognised species, suggesting that individuals may be geographically 'stranded in ...

Endemic fishes inhabiting some hot springs of Hormozgan province

This study investigated the fish species inhabiting hot springs of Hormozgan province including Geno, Khoorgoo, Sargez Khoorgoo, Siahkosh and Pahash . According to previous studies and the present study, the Aphanius ginaonis was the unique species in Geno hot spring. Fingerlings and mature females of A. ginaonis were remarkably found in the spring in August. While, previous studies reported th...
