___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: An evaluation of hydration and thermal decomposition of HAlg and its sodium salt is described using thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TG curves in N2 and air, were obtained for alginic acid showed two decomposition steps attributed to loss of water and polymer decomposition respectively. The sodium alginate decomposed in three steps. The first attributed to water loss, followed by the formation of a carbonaceous residue and finally the Na2CO3. DSC curves presented peaks in agreement with the TG data. In the IR alginic acid presented bands at 1730 and 1631 cm-1, while sodium alginate presented a doublet at 1614 e 1431 cm-1, evidencing the presence of salified carboxyl groups.

Preparation of mannuronic lactone from algin.
A simple procedure is reported for the preparation of crystalline mannuronic lactone from algin. The algin is converted to alginic acid, which is hydrolyzed by the action of concentrated sulfuric acid followed by dilute acid. In contrast to prior methods, the lactone is crystallized directly from the hydrolyzate of alginic acid without the intermediate separation of the amorphous barium salt or...

Sodium alginate, mannuronic acid-rich and guluronic acid-rich fractions were prepared from "Mekabu" (sporophyll of Undaria pinnatifida). The production of short-chain fatty acids such as acetic, propionic and n-butyric acids from these fractions in mini-scale batch culture using pig cecal bacteria was studied, and the gas released from the culture was monitored. The volume of released gas corre...
متن کاملSalt Tolerance in Rice Cultivars and Changes in Sodium and Potassium Ions
Salinity is an environmental stress that limits growth and development in plants. Due to high salinity in Khuzestan soils it is necessary to identify cultivars with appropriate yield that are compatible with Khuzestan conditions. This experiment was done to evaluate three rice cultivars for salinity tolerance at seedling stage by measuring the absorption of sodium and potassium ions and the rat...

Background: Seaweeds contain significant quantities of lipids, protein, vitamins and minerals. Aquavac Ergosan contains 1% alginic acid extracted from two brown seaweeds, Laminaria digitata and Ascophyllum nodosum. Both in vivo and in-vitro researches have mainly been focused on the effect of Ergosan on fish growth, survival rate, reproductive performance and innate immunity in blood and epider...
