The high redshift galaxy population in hierarchical galaxy formation models

چکیده

We compare observations of the high redshift galaxy population to the predictions of the galaxy formation model of Croton et al. (2006). This model, implemented on the Millennium Simulation of the concordance ΛCDM cosmogony, introduces “radio mode” feedback from the central galaxies of groups and clusters in order to obtain quantitative agreement with the luminosity, colour, morphology and clustering properties of the low redshift galaxy population. Here we compare the predictions of this same model to the observed counts and redshift distributions of faint galaxies, as well as to their inferred luminosity and mass functions out to redshift 5. With the exception of the mass functions, all these properties are sensitive to modelling of dust obscuration. A simple but plausible treatment gives moderately good agreement with most of the data, although the predicted abundance of relatively massive (∼ M∗) galaxies appears systematically high at high redshift, suggesting that such galaxies assemble earlier in this model than in the real Universe. An independent galaxy formation model implemented on the same simulation matches the observed mass functions slightly better, indicating that the discrepancy probably reflects incomplete galaxy formation physics rather than problems with the underlying cosmogony.

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

We give a brief review of current theoretical work in galaxy formation. Recent results from N-body and N-body/hydrodynamic simulations , and from semianalytic modelling are discussed. We present updated versions of some figures from Cole et al (1994). In particular, we show the effect of using the revised stellar population synthesis model of Bruzual and Charlot, which results in a much better ...

Semi-analytical Galaxy Formation Models and the High Redshift Universe

Semi-analytical models of galaxy formation based on hierarchical clustering now make a wide range of predictions for observable properties of galaxies at low and high redshift. This article concentrates on 2 aspects: (1) Self-consistent modelling of dust absorption predicts a mean UV extinction AUV ∼ 1 mag, depending only weakly on redshift, and similar to observational estimates. (2) The model...

Constraints on Galaxy Formation from Stars in the Far Outer Disk of M31

Numerical simulations of galaxy formation within the cold dark matter (CDM) hierarchical clustering framework are unable to produce large disk galaxies without invoking some form of feedback to suppress gas cooling and collapse to a redshift of unity or below. An important observational consequence of delaying the epoch of disk formation until relatively recent times is that the stellar populat...

Evolution of the Hubble Sequence in Hierarchical Models for Galaxy Formation

We present a model for the broad morphological distinction between the disk and spheroidal components of galaxies. Elaborating on the hierarchical clustering scheme of galaxy formation proposed by Cole et al, we assume that galaxies form stars quiescently in a disk until they are disrupted into a spheroidal configuration by mergers. Bulges and spheroids may continue to accrete gas from their ho...
