Fly Courtship Song: Triggering the Light Fantastic

چکیده
In a study in this issue, Clyne and Miesenböck (2008) apply an ingenious optogenetic technology to activate neurons that generate male-specific courtship song in flies. This work sheds new light on the neural circuitry underlying sexually dimorphic behaviors in Drosophila.

Drosophila courtship song: modeling behavioral pattern in terms of neural and muscle dynamics
Males of the species Drosophila melanogaster – the common fruit fly – court their females. During courtship the male extends and vibrates his wing and thereby produces courtship song, which consists of two qualitatively different modes: sine and pulse song. During song, males repeatedly switch between sine and pulse. Recent studies suggest that the male switches not randomly, but chooses whethe...
متن کاملImproving the utility of Drosophila melanogaster for neurodegenerative disease research by modelling courtship behaviour patterns
Courtship in Drosophila is used already to screen genes linked to memory-deficiency and neurodegeneration in humans. However the research community does not understand the mechanism which gives rise to courtship patterns. When a male fly encounters a female fly, he starts to follow her, licks her genitalia, sings a courtship song and eventually bends his abdomen to reach her genitalia [1]. Male...

متن کاملSong Choice Is Modulated by Female Movement in Drosophila Males
Mate selection is critical to ensuring the survival of a species. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, genetic and anatomical studies have focused on mate recognition and courtship initiation for decades. This model system has proven to be highly amenable for the study of neural systems controlling the decision making process. However, much less is known about how courtship quality is reg...
متن کاملapterous Brain Neurons Control Receptivity to Male Courtship in Drosophila Melanogaster Females
Courtship behaviours allow animals to interact and display their qualities before committing to reproduction. In fly courtship, the female decides whether or not to mate and is thought to display receptivity by slowing down to accept the male. Very little is known on the neuronal brain circuitry controlling female receptivity. Here we use genetic manipulation and behavioural studies to identify...
