چکیده

OBJECTIVE MRI plays an important role in the morphologic and functional evaluation of cardiovascular shunts. Good spatiotemporal resolution, inherent contrast resolution, wide FOV, and multiplanar imaging capabilities make MRI an ideal tool in the investigation of cardiovascular shunts. The velocity-encoded phase-contrast sequence is used in the quantification of a shunt and the steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequence is used in the assessment of the functional impact of a shunt. In this article, the role of MRI in the evaluation of cardiovascular shunts and their respective MRI appearances are described and illustrated. CONCLUSION MRI can identify and characterize septal defects, quantify shunts and their impact on cardiac function, and help in the selection of appropriate candidates for percutaneous device placement.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance in cardiac sarcoidosis with MR conditional pacemaker in situ

Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices represent important limitations to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Recently, MRI-conditional dual chamber pacemakers and leads have become available. We describe a case of a patient with neuro-sarcoidosis presenting with diplopia and hydrocephalus requiring an MRI-conditional programmable ventriculo-peritoneal shunt, who developed complete heart b...

Impact of cardiac arrhythmia on velocity quantification by ECG gated phase contrast MRI

Background Blood flow quantification using ECG gated phase contrast (PC) MRI has proven to be a useful clinical tool for the evaluation of cardiovascular pathologies such aortic valve disease or cardiac shunts. However, data are acquired in an ECG synchronized manner over multiple heart beats and the impact of cardiac arrhythmia, which can frequently be encountered in patients with atrial fibri...

[Radiological diagnosis of congenital heart diseases with left to right shunts].

Cine magnetic resonance imaging (cine MRI) was used to evaluate the cardiac structures and blood flow in congenital heart diseases with left-to-right shunts. Fifteen children with left-to-right shunts which were confirmed by echocardiography or angiography were investigated in the present study. Five children each had atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, and complete endocardial cus...

Cardiovascular abnormalities following surgery for left-to-right shunts. Observations in atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus.

SUMMARY Seventy-two patients with left-to-right shunts were studied an average of 5 years after operation. Persistent residual shunts occurred in 24 of the 72 patients and were unsuspected clinically in 11. While significant residual shunts were usually suspected in the group with ventricular septal defects (VSD), residual shunts in the group with atrial septal defects (ASD) were frequently uns...

Experience with three Brescia-Cimino shunts.

Bresica-Cimino shunts inserted to facilitate intermittent dialysis may markedly increase the circulatory load on the heart. Three patients in whom there was evidence of overload are described. Thorough investigation of the cardiac output should be made in patients with fistulae of this kind, which should be closed as soon as practicable after transplantation.
