چکیده

Hypothermia is a major contributor to newborn mortality worldwide and remains a common problem for very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, even in technologically advanced hospital settings. The attributable risk of mortality from hypothermia is difficult to establish from the scant randomized trials on delivery room stabilization of VLBW newborns, but the relationship between admission temperature and neonatal morbidities is U-shaped, suggesting that both hypothermia and hyperthermia are undesirable. Consequently, the recommended goal for postnatal stabilization is to maintain a normothermic temperature between 36.5 and 37.5 C. In the past decade, several reports have documented success in decreasing hypothermia rates at neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, although high rates of hyperthermia were concomitantly induced in some studies. In this issue of Jornal de Pediatria, Caldas et al. report the results of a quality improvement (QI) intervention to decrease hypothermia in VLBW newborns admitted to a Brazilian NICU. They successfully reduced the hypothermia

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy in a Very Low–Birth Weight Preterm Newborn

Introduction: Minimally invasive surgery is normally used in children but is not so common in newborns, especially those with very low birth weight, as a consequence of an immature cardiopulmonary system and technical difficulties. Case Description: A preterm female with very low birth weight (1.4 kg), born in the 32nd week of gestation with a prenatal diagnosis of abdominal cyst, presented wit...

A randomized trial of exothermic mattresses for preterm newborns in polyethylene bags.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Hypothermia on admission to the NICU is associated with increased mortality in preterm infants. Many newborns are hypothermic on admission despite using polyethylene bags (PBs). Using exothermic mattresses (EMs) in addition to PBs may reduce hypothermia but increase hyperthermia. We wished to determine whether placing preterm newborns in PBs on EMs in the DR results in ...

Neonatal hypothermia in Uganda: prevalence and risk factors.

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of neonatal hypothermia and associated risk factors. A cross sectional, descriptive study of neonatal hypothermia was performed on 300 newborns consecutively recruited day and night during 2 months at a Ugandan periurban hospital. Parallel tympanic and rectal temperature measurements were made at 10, 30, 60, and 90 min post partum. Rectal tem...
