STATUS OF THE CKM MATRIXa

Information about the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix describing the chargechanging weak transitions between quarks with charges −1/3 (d, s, b) and 2/3 (u, c, t) has been steadily improving over the years. Despite a wealth of experiments which overconstrain the matrix and could lead in the presence of new physics to inconsistencies, none have emerged so far at a statistically significant level. One seeks greater accuracy in the determination of CKM elements not only to expose such inconsistencies, if they indeed are present, but also to provide input for an eventual theory of these elements, which so far has been lacking. The matrix may be defined in one parametrization 1 as
