Livestock Odour Dispersion Modeling: A Review

چکیده
Abstract This paper reviewed the studies of livestock odour dispersion modeling including odor sources, odor emission rate, odor characteristics and measurements, odor dispersion modeling methods, and methods and results of adapting industrial air dispersion models for livestock odor dispersion simulations. The Gaussian plume models, Puff models, Fluctuating models and other models that have been used in livestock odour dispersion modeling were explicitly reviewed. Research work on validation or evaluation of industrial air dispersion models using various field odour plume measurement results and the various relationships between odour concentration and odour intensity generated by different studies were also discussed. Although many Gaussian models have been applied in livestock odour dispersion and achieved relatively satisfactory results, there are many differences between industrial gas and livestock odour, including emission sources, travel distance, measurement methods, that can challenge the use of Gaussian models. Since the existing commercial models are originally designed for industrial gas dispersion, it is necessary to develop a new model that can accurately predict livestock odour concentrations downwind the sources. Finally, a fluctuating model that can deal with multiple sources and variable emission rates was suggested for livestock odour dispersion with proper diffusion coefficients within the interest short distance.

Separation distance to avoid odour nuisance due to livestock calculated by the Austrian odour dispersion model (AODM)
Odour emission of livestock buildings is major burden for ambient residential areas. Using a dispersion model to calculate ambient odour concentrations, the separation distance between livestock buildings and residential areas was defined by a pre-selected odour threshold and an exceeding probability. The dynamic Austrian odour dispersion model (AODM) was used to calculate the separation distan...
متن کاملEvaluation of Air Dispersion Models for Livestock Odour Application
Instantaneous downwind malodours from two swine farrowing facilities were assessed in the field by 15 trained human sniffers. A total of 34 1-hour field monitoring sessions were carried out on the two farms between June and October in 2003 and 2004. Odour emissions from the farm were measured and weather conditions were monitored simultaneously. Four air dispersion models, ISCST3, AUSPLUME, IN-...
متن کاملOdour dispersion modelling with Lagrangian and Gaussian models
The Lagrange particle diffusion model LASAT and the Gaussian Austrian Odour Dispersion Model AODM are used to calculate direction-dependent separation distances around livestock farms. As the method has been published already in several papers, the focus is here on the differences of the results due to model physics. With both models, the same peak-to-mean algorithm is used to calculate short-t...

10 In developed Countries, coexistence of livestock production and urban settlements is a source of 11 problematic interactions that are regulated by specific legislation, often requiring the evaluation of 12 the potential environmental impact of livestock odour emissions. For this purpose, dispersion 13 models are powerful tools that can be classified as dynamic (Eulerian and Lagrangian) or st...
متن کاملEvaluation of odour impact from a landfill area and a waste treatment facility through the application of two approaches of a Gaussian dispersion model
Odour emission from landfill areas has a high potential to cause significant annoyance to people living in their surroundings. In order to avoid odour nuisance, it is crucial to select the best location in the project phase of these facilities. In the present work, two approaches of the Gaussian atmospheric dispersion model were employed to predict odour impact from a projected landfill area an...
