Newest Diagnostic Methods for Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD)
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper reviews the basis for bronchoalveolar lavage and lung function tests for the diagnosis of inflammatory airway disease (IAD)—defined as cough, airway mucus, and/or exercise intolerance. It is important to realize that these signs, no matter how subtle, may indicate the presence of lower airway inflammation, airway obstruction, and airway hyper-reactivity, which are inextricably linked. These diagnostic tests constitute a new early detection system and may be employed for screening at the individual horse or farm level. Serum Surfactant Protein D and Haptoglobin as Potential Biomarkers for Inflammatory Airway Disease in Horses
BACKGROUND The identification of serum biomarkers of lung inflammation would facilitate the diagnosis of inflammatory airway disease (IAD) in horses. HYPOTHESIS Horses with IAD have higher serum concentrations of markers of inflammation compared to controls. ANIMALS Twelve horses with IAD and 10 control horses. METHODS This was a prospective case-control study. Blood and BALF were collect...

متن کاملCharacteristic of Inflammatory Airway Disease in Japanese Thoroughbred Racehorses
Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) is a common cause of poor performance, interruption of training and premature retirement in racehorses. It is also reported that up to 80% of horses are affected at some point in the first years of training in UK and Australia. However, no studies with regard to the information on occurrence of IAD in Japanese Thoroughbred racehorses have been reported. To inve...
متن کاملIAD: Cough, Poor Performance, Mucus in the Airways--What Is So Important About That?
The lower respiratory tract responds to a variety of inhaled irritants in a stereotypical way by coughing, increasing mucus secretion, and bronchospasm. The purpose of such response is to limit further inhalation of irritants and to accelerate their removal from the respiratory tract. Additional defense mechanisms involve alveolar macrophages, airway-associated lymphoid tissue, and systemic imm...
