Late infection after total hip replacement.
Four patients who developed deep infection of six hips, on average three and a half years after total replacement by McKee-Farrar prostheses, are described. In each case there was strong evidence that the source of the infection was a distant focus.
متن کاملTotal hip replacement using the McKee-Farrar prosthesis. In rheumatoid arthritis, Still's disease, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Severe destructive change in the hip joint is not infrequent in patients with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis and Still's disease. In ankylosing spondylitis, whether primary or secondary to other diseases such as Still's disease, there may be a bony fusion or destruction. Various types of hip arthroplasty have been carried out in the last 30 years (Smith-Petersen, 1939; Chamley, 1961). The e...
متن کاملThe pathology of failed McKee-Farrar implants: correlation with modern metal-on-metal-implant failure
The McKee-Farrar (MF) prosthesis was the first widely used total hip replacement (THR) to employ a metal-on-metal (MoM) articulation. These implants had a high rate of early aseptic loosening but a number achieved good long-term implant survival, stimulating the reintroduction of second and third generation implants of this type. In this study we analysed archival histopathology of periprosthet...
متن کاملThe management of local complications of total hip replacement by the McKee-Farrar technique.
One thousand and forty-two McKee-Farrar prostheses of the present design inserted in Norwich from January 1965 to December 1972 have been reviewed retrospectively to determine the incidence of complications needing revision. Of prostheses implanted for more than two years, 6-6 per cent needed revision for loosening (cup 3-5 per cent; stem 2-2 per cent; both components 0-9 per cent). Of the tota...
متن کاملLocal experience with total hip replacement in dysplastic coxarthrosis.
Background. The goal of our study was to assess the efficacy of total hip replacement in the treatment of dysplastic arthrosis of the hip. Material and methods. Between November 2001 and June 2003 we performed total hip replacement in 40 patients (46 hips). Arthritic deformations were classified according to Crowe's classification scheme and operated using a variety of techniques and prostheses...
